Suggest a laptop.

I am looking to purchase a new laptop. I had a Compaq and know the motherboard is shot. I have heard that Compaq's lifespans are about 3 years and that's it. I want something that will last 4-5 years. I have heard Sony is real dependable, but that was the sales guy talking. Any suggestions?

I'm running the risk of being called a "fanboy" but honestly, I love my MacBook. I have the black one with 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 120 GB Hard Drive. It gives me screaming fast speed, and it was rated 8.1 out of 10 by Computer Shopper magazine making it the highest rated laptop of all in the latest issue. If you're looking to use mobile broadband you'd probably want to pass on the Macs, but if you aren't I really cannot think of a better choice. I've only recently made the switch to Mac so I've had a ton of experience with PCs and I can honestly say that none of them match up to Mac OSX.

I own a Sony laptop (the one in my sig) and I can say it's durable. And it's waaaay cooler (the temp) than the Dell laptop I'm using now.

My curiosity for Mac is on the rise. I have always avoided them since I am more familiar with PC's. Does MAC OSX allow you to run Microsoft Office software? If I email something from my work computer (a PC) to a Mac laptop will it be able to open an attachement that was done in Excel?

there are ms office for macs. you can even run windows xp on macs with intel core 2 duo. and windows xp run faster than mac osx.
I was thinking about buying it. but it's too expensive for me
so I bought compaq v3000z. cheapest laptop and you get free printer/scanner/coopier(all in one). don't get v2000z. they just give you more junk and you pay more. tv tunner does not work well without good graphics card. I thought I should get v2000z because it seemed like a better deal. but now that I have done some research I am glad I got v3000z. it's newer model too.

so my total with rebates is 710 $ with shipping. +100 for upgrading to g.skill 1gb memory
so 810$ for:
amd t-52
1gb g.skill memory
40gb harddrive sata 150
nvidia 6150 on board video
brightview 1280x800 tft screen
all in one scaner printer coppier(perfect for me ... a student)
vista home edition upgrade

Oh the double edged sword of a Compaq. YEs they do have a very good price. I am a little turned off that they are known for dying just after 3 years. I understand all computers may do the same, but Compaq's you can almost set your calender to it. I was told this when I purchased my Presario and did not believe it. Now I am stuck with a dead computer.

I talked to one of the techs at Best Buy and he said Sony is by far the computer they see the least for repair.

Right now I am probably leaning towards Sony or Mac. I have never heard of Lenovo, so I am a little weary. Thanks for all the advice. Keep it coming!

I think sony makes crap these days. A few years ago they made really good stuff now none of their electronics are top notch, they are mediocre at best but still carry the sony price tag. If you were going to spend the money on a sony I would recommend just getting macbook pro. I have a macbook pro and love it.

As for a laptop dying in 2 years or three years, that is typical. Any laptop could last you 2 years or 7 years or whatever. I had a G3 ibook previoiusly I bought back in 2003 and it still runs. Just sold it to a friend for $350.00 which is amazing since its almost 4 years old. Macs do hold their resell value and when it is time to upgrade you can always sell your old one and use the money to get a new one.

As for software options, you can run free open source versions of office that are completely compatible with MS office apps. This one is for OS X.

Lenovo is also known as IBM.

I have an Acer Laptop. Its great, fast, and reliable. Also, the one that I have is upgradable. So the first thing I did was swapped out an AMD 2.0ghz Turion 64 for an AMD 1.6ghz Turion 64 X2. Made a world of difference.

That's interesting, I bought a second hand compaq in 2005 and it was a 1999 model with no problems.

I am now of the opinion that it is luck of the draw. I do however think your chances go up with a Compaq vs. other computers. I have personally owned one and my office has purchased 7 refurbished laptops.

I have Office for Mac and can easily take all of my Word and Excel documents that I made on my Dell and open them on the Mac. Compatability problems are becoming a thing of the past as Mac gets more popular.

sorry I put the wrong price of v3000z laptop. my credit card was
charged 811$.
and I just sent receipts for 180$ rebate
so it really cost me 631$. well and 100$ for 1 gig memory upgrade
731$ for a laptop like mine!!! it's really cheap.
anyway. make sure your mobo does not overheat and everything will be fine.
dell inspiron 9100 did have overheating problems. so I get messages from time to time. ati radeo 9700 is not stable.

I will make a custom heat sink for my nvidia 6150 gpu and maybe another mini
fan . I'll do it in spring. so with that it will last a long time.

I like the sound of this. Steve Jobs has been very busy lately.
