suggestions for a 98 machine

I have an old windows 98 machine, an emachines e-tower 400ix w/ 256 ram, 400 mhz, celeron.
I'd like to build a replacement so I don't end up losing some older programs that won't run with xp and up.
It's a very old maching and is starting to show it's age, I'm afraid it might up and die tomorrow.

I'd prefer to build with AMD to keep the cost down, was thinking in the 3800 single core range.
I want to build it CHEAP, since it won't get much use, and wouldn't even mind keeping the case, hard drive, cd burner, I already have in it.

I'm mostly looking for a mobo (micro atx) onboard sound and graphics, and processor, and then memory stix and a power supply.
I just want stable and cheap, oh... and did I say cheap?

two other questions...
How much memory will windows 98 see, and can I make it see 1 gig total?

Since I just have the refresh disc for the system, will putting 98 back on be a problem with the new mobo, or do I need to buy another op system.
The version I have is 98 (first addition) so I'm not real apposed to buying 98SE, I've seen it on ebay for $78 for the full install (new) with cd and boot disc.
I've seen the SE upgrades cheaper.

This machine won't even be used on the net, once I get the available upgrades put back on, and any and all virus/firewall protection will be removed.
It's JUST to keep a couple old programs available and alive to me.

u could try running vpc in xp or something to run windows 98se.....

from doing google i found:

"Win 98 does in fact have RAM limit of 2 GB, but as there is a bug in
the memory managenment there may be problems when you install more
than 512 MB:"

Yea, I don't want to duel boot 98 onto another machine, I want to just restore this one.

I understand there is a way around the memory limitation in 98, but I don't recall how it was done.
That's the info I'm looking for. ;)

The problem I'm having with finding a mother board is that some I've looked at no longer support 98/2000, and I need 2 ati slots and no sata, I want to keep my cd burner and maxtor drive in tact, many have added the sata and removed 1 of the ati slots, I need two.

about $180

I'm not set on AMD or Intel either way, as long as the board and drivers are available to get what I have going, I'm still a bit concerned with the motherboard, MSI's website doesn't have a lot of info on it.

Older games

Depending on the programs you are trying to save, if they are games, Duke nukem, Blood, Shadow Warrior are 3 examples that don't seem to have good graphics on newer computers. Shop on ebay, new egg or tiger direct for your upgrades. Tiger direct is having a couple of good cpu/mobo sales right now. I kept an older computer and use a KVM switch to keep older games, and yet have a newer computer. I like AMD, seems like better bang for the buck.
