Found out today that our station wants to start taking pictures to post on the website and thus, Im going to be in charge of such a task. I currently have a Fuji S5000 (It might be the 7000 I dont freaking know) anyway, Its a decent camera but nowhere near SLR quality. I was interested in picking up a DSLR but didnt really know where to start or what I would be looking at spending. I would like to stay within the $500 range if possible. Any suggestion you have would be wonderful. Ive heard good things about Nikons, so if you know a good model or anything let me know!

i have the EOS400D (XTi), picked it up a couple of months ago and its been superb, will be adding a new lens to it at the end of march

Sounds like the Rebel is the way to go then lol. Im bidding on ebay for a Rebel XT for $400. If I dont win that, Ill be heading to the stores tonight to see if theres any deals. Newegg has the best price on a new one though for $454

Keep your fingers crossed! Im winning a Rebel XT with two extra memory cards on ebay right now for $400 :D 2 hours to go!

Well I didnt win on ebay BUT I have some connections at a store I used to work at and thought I'd call over and see what their prices where...

$150 price drop :D= Run over quick to get the last one!

Ill be sure to post some cool pictures with my new Rebel XT!:D:D:D

Anyone have tips for shooting inside of a courtroom? I assume lighting will be the biggest issue since it is a very old courtroom and the lamps inside are pretty darn old too. I have so many new things to learn with this camera!

We'd need more details.
Are you allowed to use flash?
Do you only have stock equipment (kit lens)?
Do you have a budget?
Are you shooting people or just the court room? If just the court room, then a tripod/ monopod would be in your best interest.

I doubt we are allowed to use the flash, and yes, Im just using the stock lens. Is there a better recomendation for a lens I could get locally? (Trial is Monday) and I would be shooting people.

For your case, a faster lens gives u more flexibility. If you can afford a f/2.8, get it!
