Suggestions for external hard drive?

Hello, this may seem like a super dumb question, but I am computer illiterate, so here it goes...

Some background, I have a MacBook Pro and only have 15.13 GB left (shown in the bottom of the finder). I'll be going off to college next year, and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a good external hard drive? Also, what size would you recommend?
Which brings me to my next question, what exactly is an external hard drive? Is it just like a giant USB, or do I have to leave it plugged in at all times? Also, would I save everything on my computer to the external hard drive as well as to my computer, or only certain things to the hard drive (like all my itunes music)?

Thanks again!

Yes, an external drive is USB-based, just plug/unplug as needed. Some require 2 USB ports (1 for data, the other for power). Make sure you get one that can run off one USB since laptops are limited in that regard.

Another option you may want to consider is something like the WD MyCloud. That would stay plugged in (in your dorm) and you could link your system to that. Everything could be stored there and if you needed a copy on your system, just move it over.

As for your first question, what capacity are you looking for?

If you think external hard disk drive would be too big for you then buy small USB stick of 64 GB.
But a 2.5 external drive in enclosure is good also. And they are not that big.
As for the capacity of the drive, that really depends on your needs.
You can get a 500 GB one if you can afford it,but then again it might be too much if you are not going to do a lot of stuff.
So in that case get a smaller one if you want to save some money.
