Suggestions for my RAM Plz

I have my first build which I made a few mistakes on. One being I thought I was buying dual channel RAM but it was actually two 1GB sticks. I now want to upgrade to 4GB of dual channel and was looking for suggestions. Gaming, encoding, burning, ripping, are all important to me. I would like to get both sticks now, but if quality warrants I could spend more and buy them separately. I am pretty sure I want 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400). I am off to work, will be back later tonight.

That doesn't mean it's not running in dual channel. Check your BIOS to see if it is or not.

In general, you're not going to notice a difference between dual channel and non-dual channel (single channel?). Gaming is the only RAM-intensive task listed there; encoding/burning/ripping are all processor intensive programs.

What are the rest of your system specs?

Alright first off that RAM is overkill.

Second, make sure your motherboard will support that. What model is it?

Third, XP 32-bit will only see 3.5GB of RAM if you put 4GB in. Not a huge deal...but it does do that.

This is my motherboard. ASUS P5K PLVM G31, 1333FSB, Onboard Video,PCI Express,DDR2,Sound,1gb LAN

I may upgrade to vista eventually. The recommended settings for farcry, hellgate london, and other games are not at the maximum and I thought the extra ram would help. Also I may eventually upgrade the motherboard. Is the ram difference that bad between vista and windows since vista requires more to run? Is dual channel where I can run a 2GB piece of ram in one slot? And I like overkill but why else would I want 4GB of sweet ram if not for gaming and doing multiple things at once, virus scan, gaming, and burning a cd at once?

Heck yes. Vista is a huge resource killer...something like 300-500MB of RAM overhead for a game, iirc.

Not at all. It's a method to enable identical (or sometimes not) RAM sticks to have separate channels to the system. Nothing to do with size.

Look here for more information on dual channel.

I never said there's anything wrong with it, as long as you're going to use it. I certainly use most of the 4GB(3.5GB) of my RAM. Just don't get the RAM you linked there, no need for it. You won't notice a difference between CAS latency of 5 vs 4 or anything like that.
This one isn't bad for a 4GB set

However, are you sure you only have 2 RAM slots? I looked up your motherboard and there wasn't much info anywhere, but it seemed like you have 4 slots. Please just confirm this for me so I don't give you any wrong information.

Ok, seperate channels, that makes sense. I am certain that I only have 2 ram slots for a max of 4GB of ram. I read that several times in my motherboard manual. Here is a pic of my current ram as well.

I will seriously consider the ram you suggested. My next eventual upgrade, other than minor add ons, may be a quad core processor, then vista, then 8GB of ram. These may not happen forever though. Oh, can I be sure that ram is compatible with my motherboard? The list in the manual is not really extensive.

That did seem like a good deal along with good ram. I am curious why your name says banned, I don't remember that. Anyway, I ordered it, thanks for the help.
