Suggestions for new laptop?

I have a four year old Compaq laptop, which is just now beginning to quit working. I am about to enter graduate school and I was looking for a light weight, but dependable laptop with which to do school work and give presentations. My upper spending limit is ~$1000.00, but the cheaper (without compromising quality) the better! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
I would suggest going to your local electronics store (i.e. bestbuy, Compusa, office depot, office max, staples, etc...) They usually have some really good deals on what you would need.

Doesn't sound like to you need a lot in the performance dept. for just doing word processing and presentations. Most laptops now a days, come with external VGA and S-Video ports for presentations and such. And the graphics cards usually can handle most stuff.
