i am looking for a laptop on the sub $1000 range.
1. there are lots of processor types out there like AMD Mobile Athlon XP ,AMD Mobile Sempron, AMD Turion 64, AMD Athlon 64, Intel Core Duo, Intel Core Solo, Intel Celeron M, Intel Pentium 4, Intel Pentium M.
which one is better?
2.which company is the most realible?
3.what min CPU speed should i go for?

3. - depends what you want to do...

sorry i was not clear.i was referring to laptop makers not the chip makers.

general stuff like letters,watching movies plus some simulation softwares and games( i am not a hardcore gamer so it doesnt have to be top of the line product.)
 
Pentium M would be a good choice for your needs, probably the best, if you need something better, like for multitasking and video editing etc., core duo is the best out there, great chip.

Low power usage on both chips, AMD's need a little more juice, therefor your battery life goes away sooner.
 
yeah... an intel pentium m/core solo or amd turion is probably your best choice... either will work for your not-so-high needs...

as for reliable, ibm is one that sticks out in my mind... i've also had no trouble with dell, but everybody on this forum hates them it seems like...
 
1. I would say a Penitum M
2. Both are, depends on what your use of the laptop is
3. I would say atleast a 1.5 + if you are getting M
