Hey, I just bought an Eee netbook from Asus. After a couple hours of using it I got a virus. No idea how. In the few hours that i had it I downloaded 2 things: A divx codec and an adobe reader thing. However I was on a video streaming site when the virus appeared (www.surfthechannel) dont know if i got it from there.
Anyway I tried some microsoft antivirus program, started a scan, crashed. couldnt open the program. I just tried the malwarebytes program suggested here, started running a scan, crashed. So does anyone know how I can get rid of this?
The virus is infact an anti spyware software named PC Security. Down in my task bar appeared a red dot with a white X in it saying my pc is infected ect. Tells me to click on it to fix it. So i did. It opens up this PC Security software and tells me to run a scan so i do. It finds like 20 or 30 viruses or something then asks me to register, of coarse leading me to a site to make payments.
I tried uninstalling this PC Security through add and remove programs, and its official uninstall exe. But it just keeps reappearing. I cant even use MSN. My Msn logs in and 3 seconds later gives me an error and crashes.
Ive already called Asus and they told me to restore default factory settings on the netbook via this disc. But my netbook doesnt have a disc drive so i dont want to spend more money buying one just for this. So im trying to find a free antivirus software that can override this virus or something.
This all blows really hard, so if anyone can suggest anything useful i'd really appreciate it.

If you have another computer with a diskdrive and a spare usb drive you should be able to install the recover disks to the usb and then restore the Eee via the usb. Alot of the Eee Pc's don't have a diskdrive because they are too small to have one so they have the recovery disk setup to be able to be stored on a usb. I know with my one I have it stored on a usb so it might be the same with yours.
