I just bought supreme commander and I was putting in the cd key from the box but it didn't work. I checked everything about it and it was all right. So I went online and got a cd key from the internet. Is that bad?
 
That is illegal, cause you pirating it.

Call the company with your serial and explain your situation and see if they can give you a new serial.

Or e-mail them.
 
You have to use the serial key that came with it, because otherwise you are breaking the copyright laws and then becomes illegal.

Actually no, thats not the case with keys, just media, but its still illegal as what he is doing is breaking the EULA and they can sue forbreach of contract.

Ring them up and ask for a new one. Otherwise exchange it at the place of purchase
