Surprised by the Speed

The motherboard on my desktop died. It had (AMD Athlon)1.41 Ghz processor and about 540MB RAM

I temprary replaced it with an old laptop: (AMD Duron)896 Mhz processor and 256MB RAM (Though it might acatually be more than 500. I need to open it up and see if another chip was put in)

Anyway, This lap top is just as fast, if not faster than the desktop. And just as fast as my computer at work that is like (Pentium 4)3GHz with 1GB Ram.

I am wondering if it is because I don't see any security on it. We took it all off because we stopped using it for internet purposes several years ago.

When I do install security I am wondering if it wil lslow it down considerably.

With the small amount of RAM you have the anti-virus you install will be a resource hog and it will slow your computer down. With background scanning taking place it will eat into your memory and CPU useage to a lesser degree.
