Swap Hard Drive from one Laptop to another

Hi All,

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T410i laptop which is getting a little old and was looking to find a way to have a backup laptop in case this one dies due to hardware issues. Buying a brand new laptop is not an option due to cost and a lot of proprietary software that I use for work.

The thought was to buy an identical (as identical I can get on eBay) Thinkpad T410i from eBay without the Hard Drive. This way if my current laptop dies, I could simply pull out the hard drive from this laptop and slap it in the other one and be on my way.

Unfortunately that plan is not working out so far. I bought a T410i (no hard drive) from eBay (I am sure some components on the new laptop are probably different). I pulled the hard drive from my current laptop and put it in the new one and started it. Windows starts loading (the logo screen starts to appear) and then immediately I get a blue error screen and the laptop restarts and recommends going into repair mode (which I went to and let it 'try' to repair the OS automatically but after spinning for 5-7 minutes, it just quits). I tried putting in 2 different hard drives from the current (old) laptop into the new one (One a good ole magnetic HDD and another SSD which I recently upgraded to) and both don't work in the new laptop (same error, same symptoms) even though both work perfectly in the old laptop. Also tried swapping the RAM from the old to the new laptop and still no luck.

The error I get (which flashes on the screen for barely a millisecond):
" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
STOP 0x00000007B"

My questions are:
1. Is my plan even possible or is this a fools errand?
2. Any ideas on why this plan doesn't work? Assuming it has something to do with windows possibly not recognizing or liking the changed components on the new laptop (although I would have thought that the OS would at least start up and maybe be cranky and finicky once it does)
3. If possible, is there anyway I can 'repair' windows to work with the new laptop (basically be able to swap the hard drives back and forth seamlessly).

I am a relative novice with hardware issues and would appreciate your 'dumbing down' your comments to my level ;-). Thanks all for your help.

There are many different versions of the T410i. Look on the bottom and compare the model numbers - they're probably very different.

My current laptop has a Product Type of 2516-CTO and the new one is a 2516-BQU. Would this matter so much and any way to get around the problem?

First I'd make sure I didn't purchase a lemon. A good thing to do would be to download a copy of Ubuntu Desktop from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop, burn it to a DVD and boot into it on the new laptop. It will give you the option to try the OS without having to install it, so this would give you the ability to test your hardware (video, sound, ethernet/wireless, etc.).

If everything is working ok then you can start focusing on the hard drive. For testing purposes I'd start with a blank hard drive and install Windows on it (assuming you have an installation disk). If Windows installs and runs fine on the laptop you got through eBay, then further troubleshooting would need to be done to figure out why moving a hard drive from one laptop to another is failing. At least by this time you'll have eliminated the possibility that you purchased a faulty laptop.

In the end, you may end up figuring out what causes this issue, and how to resolve it. If not, at least you already have Windows running on the new laptop. When you've got some free time on your hands you can even install some of your most commonly used applications on the backup laptop. If your current laptop dies, you can quickly attach the hard drive to the other PC using a USB dock and quickly transfer all your files. Not the greatest option compared to just swapping a hard drive from one PC to another, but better than starting from scratch.

Good luck.
