I have an old hard drive (windows 98) and it has files on it my dad needs. Recently the cumputer died but my dad needs the files (for insurence reasons or something like that).

My question: Is it safe for my to slap the Hard Drive into another computer (not new but not as old as the one it was previously)? My friend have an extra one but he doesnt want me to mess it up.

Thanks Jake

You can put your dads hard drive in his computer just make sure you are still using your friends hard drive to boot. Once his computer is booted up with your hard drive in it you can get the files off it.

I think thats what you where asking...:)

Yes but i cant boot off my dads Hard Drive? I would take his out first.

EDIT My dads hard drivve has windows 98 on it

Windows doesn't like it when you switch mother boards normaly. Thus if you try to boot his hard drive in your friends pc you would most likely get a BSOD. Hooking your dads hard drive as a slave in your friends computer then booting his computer off his harddrive would let you transfer the files off your dads hard drive with no damage done to your friends computer/hard drive.

just make sure your dads hdd is set to slave then when you turn on your friends pc it will show up under my computer allowing you to access it and to transfer the files you want to floppy or cd

He wasnt asking about Motherboards...

Anyway the Slave option as he said is a little metal clip on the end of the HD... It basically connects to metallic plugs. (this is all by the power and IDE cable plugin side of the drive.)
