is there anything i should know before i change the mobos on my pc? i mean, i've done things like this before, i moved completely a computer into another case and i've added a lot of different things to my computer and basically understand it. But like i said, is there anything important to know before i try it for the first time? i've been trying to read up on it, and stuff...

EDIT: BTW i'm running windows ME

EDIT2 (BUAHAHA!!): i just found this website (http://www.basichardware.com/howto_install_a_motherboard.html) and its seems pretty good, but i don't think i'm gonna go throught the trouble of wiping my harddrive...but do you guys really think it should be done?

you'll have to reformat the drive if you get another mobo, or at least install windows again

if the new mobo has an other chipset as your old one, you have to reinstall windows. (shure, you can try, there is a small (note: very small) chanse that it will work without reinstalling it ;) )

well i just got XP Pro for my computer...so i figure i'll just take all my files i need and back them up on my external harddrive. then just completely wipe my entire harddrive of everything, (windows files and all) then install the new stuff, and boot it, make sure it works, then install XP after i can get it to boot and i get the MSDOS prompt...

So i've solved the problem of wiping my hard drive, but what about the actual pysical installation of the mobo and proc...does anyone have any tips for me? and btw my mobo is here and my proc here they are both newegg links which is also where i bought them off of...

that thread doesn't really help me, i know how to build a computer from scratch mind you, i'm just not sure if there is anything i should do before i attempt upgrading mobos in a working computer

Well look at it this way: if you take everything apart (which you pretty much are doing to upgrade a motherboard) you'll have a bunch of parts on the table ... kinda like if you were building your own computer.... :)

shit i just thought of something and i'm really angry now...i was saying how i have XP and i figured i would just wipe my drive and then install the new mobo and then install XP, but i just realized that i bought the upgrade version of XP ****...pissing me off now. but i don't know what to do. i think that i may as well just install XP before i do the mobo and then install the mobo but then, how would i go about formatting and stuff, or besides that someone please tell me what to do with this...

Well have you wiped the drive yet? In either case, you can probably find a copy of Windows95 or Windows98 in a small computer store to use as an upgrade point ... for formatting, have a look at here
