Swapping motherboards

Ok ive asked this question before but never got a proper definate answer for it, at the moment i have a fujitsu-siemens computer with a full xp restore disk, at the moment when i reinstall with it on the current computer i am on, it does not ask me to activate it, i even installed it on another hard drive (on the same comp)still didnt ask me, so im assuming theres a code written somewhere on the motherboard, but thing is my new motherboard is arriving tomorrow, and before i install it i need to know a few things, the new motherboard has the same chip ie: i915p so do u think i will have to reinstall windows again, and also i have a feeling cause ive changed motherboards if i do need to reinstall its going to ask me to enter the license key to activate it, i have a license key on the fujitsu-siemens case, will that work, and if it dont, am i within my rights to phone microsoft and ask them to give me another one, even though i have changed the original motherboard, thanks in advance. :)

i dont think you would have to re-install win xp when you get your new motherboard!

and also i have a feeling cause ive changed motherboards if i do need to reinstall its going to ask me to enter the license key to activate it, i have a license key on the fujitsu-siemens case, will that work

the CD-key ony your pc case is for the windows CD you got with that pc (make sure it is the right CD for a start) so it would work with the CD! but as i said i dont think you will have to re-install windows so i doubt you will need it!

Thanks for the reply, even though its called a restore cd, its actually a full copy of windows, as ive successfully managed to install it on another computer, it asked for the license key though, thats my only worry that when i go to all the trouble of swapping the motherboards, it will ask me for the key and when i put in the one i have printed on my case it wont work and then im stuck, that why i need to know if im within my rights to ask microsoft to supply me with another one that works, im surprised i havnt heard anyone else with this same problem before, and yeh i have my fingers crossed i wont actually end up having to reinstall as they are the same chips, but this motherboard is retail and the other was a oem so i dunno, but eventually im gonna need to reinstall anyway, so better to know now, cheers

I just put in another motherboard into my computer and I got the blue screen of death when windows booted up. think I should reinstall windows, or is it something else?

the key on my case doesnt work either, you could try contacting microsoft, the only thing is, is if they do allocate another key to you you are going to have to have proof of ownership of the windows disc! if you dont, either borrow one off of someone or buy a new one.......

I still have the reciept from when i bought the computer, its only like 5 months old i just wanna upgrade the motherboard and the windows cd came with the computer.

Just wanted a better one, the one i got now works fine, so IF i manage to install the new one alright, im gonna sell the old one, only time will tell :D

If you have a restore disc then what you did was restore XP right? Cuz you cant reinstall with a restore disc (as that would eliminate the point of making restore and install cds)

While you may not have to ... it's more than ideal to.

It is a full installation xp cd, it says on the cd fujitsu-siemens restore cd but ive installed it on another computer just to try it out and it worked. And just an update i installed my new motherboard it didnt boot up so i had to reinstall windows, had a feeling id need to anyway even though they are both 915p chip motherboards hmm, anyway i got myself a new case yesterday this one http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=90896 , i dont usually get excited about cases but wow i LOVE it, my temps before getting this was 50c idle and its now 35c, never knew a case would make so much difference, the case looks hot too

I know with like the dell reinstall disks they only work in dells. alot of times with the reinstall disks they only work in the type of pc.

yep i know usually restore disks/cds are crap and only work on the machine they came with but i got lucky :) cause this one works on any computer. Id definatly buy a fujitsu comp again, the only thing i didnt like about it was that the fsb etc settings were locked reason for me going for a new mobo.

Well if you have a Fujitsu restore CD, it should work on fujitsu systems when you buy a new one (should)
