switch to alternative screen

I have experienced this weird issue a few times times at random when nothing much was going on my pc.

Basically my main screen goes black nothing to display/flashing led on screen, but what was on my main screen is showing on my extended secondary screen. So if I had excel open at the time it shows it open on my secondary extended screen. I would restart the pc to get both back working.

I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550ti. One port goes to my main pc screen - a samsung syncmaster 215tw (dvi) and my extended secondary screen - pioneer plasma screen (dvi). The pioneer is hdmi to hdmi, but I use an adaptor on the pc end to convert into a dvi.

Anyone want to guess why this happening. The graphics card is not OC, but my PC is - not that it is doing much when it happens .

Any ideas folks ?
 
Do you have the latest drivers?

Have you set up the multiple monitors through the nVidia control panel? Are you using any third party software to configure the dual displays, something like Ultramon?
 
I do have the latest drivers. It was doing this rarely with the old drivers too.

multiple monitors have been set up through the nVidia control panel. I am not using any other software to control the 2 screens. So bit confused why this happens.

Curious if anyone has experienced this ? could it be sometimes when i power on the plasma screen it sends a signal to the pc to switch to it and somehow knock my monitor - in other words my plasma is messing with the graphics card ?
 
Perhaps its the video card? If it isnt powerful enough or is defective it can cause these kinds of problems
