switching chipsets

Well im upgrading to a64 3000, and an nforce 3 board, from my current Socket A, athlon xp 1800 (i accidently fried my other processor, so i have to use my old 1800 atm) as you can see im in need of an upgrade cause im running a x800xl with that puppy XD you can imagine the bottleneck.

but well the real question is when i switch my mobo should i just format it right hen and there? or is there a chance that it might work without formating?

Unless you get another nforce 3 chipset, i highly doubt you will be able to run windows without needing to reformat. I would reformat anyways, since you would probably get better performance then if you tried to stick with the version thats on there now.

You never ned to reformated when switching motherboard, sometmies you have to reinstall windows, but you shouldn;t ever have to reformat. sometimes you can get away with nothing.

ummm... dont get socket 754, it doesnt support dual channel ram...
not to mention not supporting dual core or anything good like that...

Not everyone has that much cash. and 754 can eaily run anything today.

1.That's that true at all, for one it takes much longer, and for two you can loose alot of data that you dont with to be lost, and it can take HOURS AND HOURS to reinstall everything on the harddrive if you have alot.

I reformated once, started at 8:00PM on friday....Stoped at 11:00PM that night...Started again at 9:00PM Finally finished all updates, drivers and reinstalling almost everything i had there again, 6:00PM, Finished retweaking 8:00PM Those aer just aproximate times...The PC I diid it on was a slower harddrive so it took a little bit longer, so a normal harddrive made in this time would go a bit faster but still i hope i never have to again, just reinstalling XP took about 25min when i reinstalled ita couple weeks ago for my semperon 3400+ socket 754

First, it takes about 20 seconds to format using the NTFS (Quick) format.

Second, if he puts his new parts in his computer, windows isnt going to be operational, and he will need to reinstall windows. And if he does that then all the data and settings will be lost (unless he backs them up first), so it doesnt matter what you do, but i would reformat.
