Switching motherboard. Do I need to install full version of windows?

So my mobo is fried. I've never changed one out and I figure I'll go ahead and upgrade the processor to AMD phenom while I'm at it. Will I need to buy a full version of windows to get the thing running again? I have a back up disk and I just got Win 7 from my school, but it's an upgrade not the full version. Will either of those do the job?

Thanks!

I have the backup discs that I got with the pc and a win 7 upgrade disc (it says pre-existing OS license required on there). I guess those won't work? Is it even necessary? Shouldn't windows still be on my hard drive?

Yes you can do a full install with the upgrade disk. Search around and you'll find instructions. As for the backup disks, those wont work if they came with a pre-loaded pc. The backup disks are linked/limited to that certain mobo/pc.
