So i have my custom built PC and want to upgrade the cpu from a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 3.1GHz to a AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz.

Second: if i replace the cpu will my operating system (windows xp home edition 32 bit) still work

Might be wrong but I think it should fit.
But you'll have to back up your files if you don't want to lose them, I believe.

Yes the cpu will work, but i would recommend looking at a phenom II quad or triple core, as the 9600 still has a translation lookaside buffer error, you prolly would need to update your bios though to support the cpu. OS should work fine just changing the cpu

Well, once overclocked, a Phenom II X3 710($99) is better than a 9600.

Yes, plus it overclocks very well(can prolly get at least 3.4ghz out of it, if not 3.6 or so)

For around the same price you would be better off getting either one of these. Even for a Quad the 9600 is pretty much a dog.
