Symptoms of an incompatible CPU?

So, my new board apparently doesn't support Core 2 Duo's. What would the symptoms be if i used one in my mobo with a complete system?
Unstable? Restarts? Crashes? Reduced component life? Component Failure?
Or would it not boot at all?

EDIT: on another note how does a 3.4ghz 800fsb 2M cache HyperThreading Pentium 4 cope with Left 4 Dead?

if it can't support core2duo, it simply won't boot because it won't be able to power and/or recognise the CPU.

That processor probably would play it but on what settings, i dunno, the system requirements for CPU are:

CPU: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 or AMD64X2

so it would deffinately run it as it is better than a single core 3GHz P4 processor, but probably not on high settings

so, if i got a pentium dual core 2.2 or 2.4ghz which is supported by my mobo, How would it run with:
2GB DDR2 667 or 533 (havent bought ram yet, 667 is highest mobo can support)
GeForce 9500GT/9600GT (only at 1024x768 @ 75hz, crippled monitor)
any SATA HDD.

I hope to max the settings. I know the 9500gt can max it at that resolution.
