i have a problem with my computer, whenever i turn it on, a message on a black screen comes up saying:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>/system 32/ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file

can anyone please explain this to me? and how do i go about fixing this? will i have to format which is something i really dont want to do?

If you still have the Windows install disk you can boot from the disk and attempt to do a Windows repair install.

i have a windows reinstall cd, but i just dont know how to install it, im not very good with computers

i put the cd in and turned my computer on but it still comes up with the same screen

would you know how to boot it from the disk?

You'll have to get into your BIOS and change the boot priority. Your computer is trying to boot from your hard drive where your messed up copy of Windows is. You'll need to change the boot priority in BIOS to boot from your CD-ROM drive. When you boot the computer on, it should run the Power On Self Test (POST), during this time you'll be able to hit F2, F10, or F12 to get to your BIOS. It'll have your different options at the bottom of the screen and will be the one that says either BIOS or Setup (depends on your mobo manufacturer) and hit the corresponding key. If you don't hit the key fast enough, no worries, just reboot and try again. Go through your BIOS options after getting in and find the one that says boot priority and change it to your CD-ROM, hit F10 to Save and Exit which will cause your computer to reboot again. This time instead of getting the error an option should come up that says 'Press any key to boot from disk'. This will get you to the Windows install. From there, see this article: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm. Good luck.

hi
To resolve this you can resolve this error only by the use of recovery console , but to use this recovery console you need to have a cd of the operating system .

Unfortunately with Windows Recovery using the NTFS file system you only get Read permission and can't write anything, you have to get a separate boot disk, made on a floppy, usb, or CD if you have a secondary disk drive, with a boot program giving you Read/Write permissions.
