System Beeping

Hey everyone!

So I have a custom build that is starting to do the whole 3 beeps at random. Some times it won't do it all day and like today it happens in random intervals. I guess I will just drop my specs and see if anyone might have some insight. I am kinda wondering if this is from installing the new coolermaster heat sync or my RAM giving me issues.

I would start my removing RAM DIMMs. Remove one DIMM at a time and see if the system will boot and not beep. If it only boots with say the Corsair RAM, then you know something's wrong with your OCZ RAM. If you get the system to boot, go into the BIOS and make sure the timings and frequencies are correct for the RAM and then try again. Or it could be your CPU cooler is shorting out one of your DIMMs in which case you need to get that cooler off or remove the DIMM. The chances are that cooler covers at least one RAM bay, and it is making contact with the DIMM in the bay closest to it and shorting it out.

Yeah the cooler is super big, it is covering on of the OCZ sticks right now...was kind of worried about it because it doesn't seem to be very secured to the CPU. I was told not to use programs like Everest for detecting temps and frequencies...should I just do all of that with the BIOS?

You can use programs like Everest to get temperatures, though the BIOS is going to be more accurate most likely. I'd try removing both of the OCZ DIMMs, leave it with the just the 8GB of the Corsair RAM for a couple of days, and see what happens. I bet that's your issue.

I think I will try that, not sure when I will have time because taking the heat sync off is quiet a task haha! Totally regretting buying that thing....such a hassle.

To be honest you're probably not going to see the difference between 8GB and 12GB of RAM unless you have loads of memory-hungry applications or multiple virtual machines open at any one time. You have a Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU right? I presume you bought that cooler to overclock your 965? That Black Edition 965 is unlocked so you can overclock it and gain more performance that way. Overclock your 965 BE and stick with the 8GB of RAM for the time being.
