System Optimizer

I've been using this program called TuneUp Utilites on my systems for a while and it cleans out and optimize my system (supposedly). Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew about any other programs like this that could be better, if these things really work at all? Thanks

There are quite a few that have come out since the Windows 95 days that have been as often seen a waste of time. Regular maintainence on things like the periodic run of the defragmenter tool and a good registry cleaning after a volume of programs have been installed and later removed is more of an actual help. The msconfig utility can also be used to reduce any unnecessary startup items in order to free up resources like the system memory.

Two freeware programs that do more good then harm are RegCleaner and CCleaner. The first has been there all along for cleaning and even performing some repairs in the system registry. "crap cleaner" the nick name for the second cleans up garbage left on the drive that simply takes up space and does nothing like temp folders created by software installers as well as having it's own registry cleaner. The nice part is... they are both free!

RegCleaner is found at http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

CCleaner(crap cleaner) is found at http://www.ccleaner.com/

Just be carefull when running CCleaner if you save a bunch of files in folders you make for one type like jpgs, wavs, gifs, photos, etc. since it likes to auto delete unattached files not associated with any onstalled programs like game saves. Other then that it removes a ton of temps folders buried in DocumentsandSettings and other places that you don't even know are there.

Ditto on that, though I've never run into that problem since I always double check what folders it's deleting from. Besides this problem CCleaner is a great program.

i have used it before but not sure how good it does to be honest

ccleaner.com is good for cleaning your computer up though:)

The one problem found with it is that it will at times automaticelly start deleting files it sees as clutter. Lets say you have a bunch of jpgs saved in a separate folder outside of the MyDocuments or Programs Files directories it may go right after them since there is no program association seen with them. When going to use it you simply keep an eye on just what is saying good bye there. RegCleaner on the other hand simply cleans and does some repairs on registry orphans, invalid entries by installers, or repairs valid keys at times.

i can recomend AusLogics BoostSpeed,It has loads of optimisers built in....ive optimised my internet connection with it and its realy faster now....downloads take half the time they used to.

That's a retail software found at http://www.auslogics.com/boost-speed/ since someone forgot to mention that. I more or less tend to shy away from a number of these due to simply adding another startup item and eventually seeing Windows itself being slowed down. For dialup you may see an improvement. They have a shareware 15day tryout if you are interested.
