greetings,
i am not sure what i did or how i did it but, when i attempt to go to system restore by any means i know of (and that includes anything that i know of through the control panel), i get the following message that pops up
"SYSTEM RESTORE HAS BEEN TURNED OFF BY GROUP POLICY. TO TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE, CONTACT YOUR DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR.".

i am running xp pro sp1 and sp2. any ideas as to how i can restore ACCESS to the function"....thanks.

You will have to go into "Programs>accessories>system tools>System Restore" to uncheck the disable system restore or make sure it is unchecked like seen in the desktop image here. You are currently lacking any restore points as well with this feature turned off.

is pretty obvious that you dont have permission...
huh?....obvious nothing!..it is my personal home computer and i am the only one here...i do not know what happened or why i am getting this message......(obvious?...yeah....humnnn)........thanks for the reply!

Try this.

* Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT and press Enter
* Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore

* In the right-pane:

* Delete the value DisableConfig
* Delete the value DisableSR

What Kof2000 is referring to there is seen on the system as "group policy" where there are restrictions on what permissions are granted to a user account even an administrator's account when that is moved into a user group. The message you are seeing is explained at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/srpolicy.htm

The MS article that outlines how to disable the system restore feature can also be reviewed to see how to re-enable it as well. This is seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283073/

system restore is back up however, i have lost my restore points. i have also lost (before i did this) my "sounds" such as e-mail notification, windows exit, etc etc......maybe i can live with that as i reall don't want to reformat this computer.

....ok, after reloading my mother board disc, i still have no sound out of this thing. when i click on a sound file, it gives me a message that there is a problem with my sound device. any ideas on this restoration or why i no longer have any restore points. thanks for any help....

Seeing as I don't click on each of the hundreds of links you post on here every day, I couldn't possibly know what was in it. Had you done what I did, and just posted the relevant information contained in the link, I would have seen that and not bothered looking for the answer. Sending people off all over the internet isn't necessary, just post the answer!

Are you using onboard or an installed sound card? Often when your sound gets knocked you have to into the "Device Manager>Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" and click on the uninstall option to remove the existing installation seen there. After a system restart go back into the DM and look for anything there or in "other devices" with a yellow mark. Right click again and browse the driver folder on the mother board cd or download an update for the card that sometimes(like Creative) has it's own installer.

Meanwhile if you have anymore problems seen with the system restore feature you may want to keep the two links there and a troubleshooting guide for referecence seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796/en-us At the bottom you will see several more like how to start the restore process manually by entering " %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe " at the safe mode/command prompt only option seen in the F8 boot menu. That can be a big help when Windows fails to load.

"Are you using onboard or an installed sound card?" i am using an on-board sound card

"you have to into the "Device Manager>Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" and click on the uninstall option to remove the existing installation seen there." i thought about doing that but, had a fear that it would not re-self install" however, i will try this!

Glad to see the reinstall got the sound back for you. Meanwhile I've been having some fun with Creative beta drivers in Vista? :eek: The auto update method downloaded SB Live instead of SB Audigy drivers. "BLUE SCREENS"! :eek: Got rid of those SB Live for the Audigy beta replacements. Finally the audio console instead of the EAX console saw EAX work... finally! :D any room in the end zone left? :P

thats because once you turn it off it will warn you that all restore points will be deleted.

For XP there's one program to solve all restore point problems when those are lost. Setpoint. By simply creating a desktop shortcut to show settings you can create as many new ones as you want in one day's time alone. If you are prone to need restore points often this one creates a new one every time you first startup each day as well as the ones you create manually. It's worth the $15 retail price and you can try it out for 30 days found at http://www.easydesksoftware.com/spoint.htm
