System Restore

I am using windows 7 and all software and drivers have been updated. I cannot get system restore to work even in safe mode. I keep getting this error "System restore did not complete successfully. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0*80070570)". How can I fix this?

Try selecting a different restore point.

Why do you need to do a system restore anyway?
 
I tried using several restore points and nothing works. I need it, because it should be a quick way of correcting minor issues. I found a work around to an issue I was having, but I still want to know why I can't use system restore.

System restore is very unreliable and only works about 50 percent of the time. Your restore points are probably corrupted. Usually disabling system restore and then reenabling it again usually allows it to work correctly again for awhile.
