System Restore

Thank you Ohedokey:

I tried most of what was on the suggest site with no luck. However I can't seem to be able to work through the following suggestion (quote):
I had the same problem - System Restore points were being deleted after a reboot, and Volsnap errors were logged in the System event log. Here's how I fixed it:
1: Open a command prompt
2: Type Vssadmin list shadowstorage
3: Take note of what the shadow storage allocation is on the drive you're having issues with, in my case it was C: and the allocation was 18GB.
4: Change the allocation by using the Vssadmin command, syntax: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1G (where Maxsize=the amount of disk space you've allocated to System Restore points. In my case it was 20 GB
5: In the case of the C: drive, the syntax would be VSSAdmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize =20G
This worked for me, after increasing the size and rebooting my restore points were still intact and no longer being deleted.

When I go to CMD run as adminstrator I get this:

Just so it's clear, the system will load System Restore on start-up and I can load it manually, but in both cases it will disappear soon after I start using my computer.

I would say just reinstall windows. Either you have sofware installed that is corrupting system restore of something else has happened. You have already tried disabling and re enabling system restore and it hasn't worked. Let me see a list of your installed programs. Download and open Ccleaner.

https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

Click on tools, click on uninstall, click on save to text file. Save the file and then copy and paste the contents back here.

Hi & thank you johnb35:

Removed the two Java's and the RegClean. I have been using the MVReg cleaner and the CClaeaner reg cleaner for years without any trouble. I found that they seem to find different problems in the registry so I use both.
I did run the sfc /scannow before but to be sure I ran it again, the results are below. I will now check the results.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

You really shouldn't be using any registry cleaner as you take a chance on screwing the pc up to where you have to reinstall windows. Just use the regular cleaner in Ccleaner, don't use the registry cleaner.

That log says no files are damaged. You might want to just reinstall windows.

Thanks for your help.
I reinstalled windows, what a pain, and that solved the system restore problem. I think it even solved the windows freeze problem that bothered me for some months now.

Thanks all

Good to hear. Let us know how its going in a few days to see if you still have your restore points.

HI:
So far so good with the restore points. I think I have it close to where it was before the reload of windows 7. I have been updating the windows all day, but now I have 14 updates that refuse to load. Error code 800706F7. Too frustrated to stay up any longer. I ran the usual suggestions, Microsoft Fix It, Windows Update Diagnostic, SFC /scannow, to no avail. Any suggestions?

You could of had a corrupt VSS writer and I could have helped you fix it, also a repair install could have been done before a complete reinstall. Complete nuking is a last resort for me and I have done it once over 8 years ago.

For future reference. http://kb.macrium.com/knowledgebasearticle50010.aspx

Windows 7: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how-tos/how_repair_faulty_windows_installation_without_reformatting

Windows 8: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

Windows XP: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

I had a system restore issue where I couldn't even use it! I found out it was Softperfect's RAM disk. I uninstalled and all is fine. Never had that happen before with The RAM disk installed.

In addition to Super antispyware and malwarebytes I use Herdprotect, Freefixer and Emsisoft Emergency Kit.

The best thing you could run is a browser in Sandboxie. Currently Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Pale Moon and Waterfox have settings you can configure in Sandboxie. I have tried to make Cyberfox work and I can't. It will sandbox Cyberfox, but I can't allow access to the profile.

If you use a browser that is mentioned above with Sandboxie configure Sandboxie to delete contents on exit, access profile (at reduced security but less cumbersomeness) and access to bookmarks. I wrote about this on my blog. http://blog.************.net/?p=42

OK I just loaded Windows 7 for the second time. The updates are working, and the restore points are there (lots of them). Computer seems to be running MUCH better than before. I wish it was an easier thing to do though. Thanks to all for your efforts, it is appreciated.
Johnb35 I think you have the power to clean up all the stuff above this note, so please do so if you wish.
