System shows 4x more used up space

Hi,

my Windows 7 shows that my hard drives have about 4 times more used space than in real. There are no hidden files, the recycling bin is empty.

I tried to (slow) format that hard drive and copied back data. It was about 7 gigs. After about 1 week the system shows 28gb used.

Can the hard drive be faulty, therefore I should quickly consider replacing it?

Its strange what happens... I had to do the format because the disc had only 4mb free. After reformat it showed capacity correctly but after a week its is mysteriously filling itself again.

How big is your hard drive? You can set system restore to use less space on your drive. It's also possible that you are infected and its creating more and more files. Which in that case you would run this procedure.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

It is a 160gb internal drive with 2 equal partitions. Both partitions seem to be harmed and therefore show 4 times more used space than in actual.

When I click either one and select all files and folders by ctrl + A on each partition I get the actual number which is about 7 gigabytes on each.

Running the tests now...
