System slowdown?

Recently my system right now has been slowing down like hell. I've got a 250 GB hard drive, core 2 duo processor, Windows Vista home basic and a gigabyte of RAM. What's the cause of the slowdown? I do suspect it's my operating system though as i want to upgrade it to Vista home premium. Any suggestions?

First thing i would check is background processes and services, go to task manager and see what is using up memory, virtual memory and cpu usage.

defragment your hard drive, download avast antivirus software and do a full system scan, and download a program called CCleaner. make the program analyze your computer, and then click 'run cleaner'

if that does not help, you could always try overclocking your processor a little bit, unless your computer is made by a large manufacturer like HP or DELL

Ahem. Problem solved. I had a Sempron 1.8GHz with Basic and 1GB + 256MB. It used 44% on idle.
He did say that his system has been slowing down, not that it was always so. If he has loaded a bunch of memory resident programs since the build than the ram could be the issue. I would check your system for spyware, adware, malware, etc. first! If it is clean, consider upping the ram to 2 gigs!

I started having this problem also, i would lag in games, and everything.
I also had just 1 gig, but had Windows XP Media Center Edition, I added 2 more GIGs (3GBs total) and it ran MUCH faster at everything, but now it's slowing down again, but thats also because my comp has gotten seriously infected, which sombody on this forum is helping me with right now :)

If anything that would make it slower - please explain your logic as to why adding more programs and features would somehow make it faster?

There is no logic. If you follow this "logic", running Ultimate x64 would make your computer run like new

(It wouldn't)

System Restore can make system slowdown ?

I often use system restore to back in my previous setting,
and my system be slowdown.
what happen with it?

to see if that 1 gig of ram in your vista basic is the problem check task manager and see if the memory is being used up. if so then add more ram

many good advice were given. have you tried them?

use ccleaner

defragmentation of files is also a cause of progressive slowing. use a good 3rd party defragger like ultimate defrag. read their pdf file to appreciate the hd fragmentation dynamics and how it affects performance

more startup programs is also a cause of progressive slowing. use ccleaner's startup removal or run msconfig

malware accumulation is ----. use a good and low bloat antivirus program like nod32, use spyware doctor, or use free programs

de-select some of the eye catching display options like "shadows".... etc

turn off indexing serivce

turn off system restore (unless you really need it)
