i am using windows xp service pack 2 and have been for a while. the last few days, my system tray icons are not loading correctly. in msconfig they are all checked off. aol instant messenger always loads in the tray though. the things that dont are the volume icon and HP director for my HP Printer. In the volume control panel, it is checked off to have the icon to load. i can get it to load if i uncheck it, apply, recheck it, then hit apply. So i have no idea what is going on. Also, does anyone know how to disable dell support from loading. it is not in msconfig or anywhere else i've looked. thanks

I ran into the same problem! This is a very interesting problem due to conflicts within the operating system. It also has a surprising solution for me:

1. Go to Start menu, click "Run"
2. Type in "services.msc" and hit enter.
3. In the new window that popped up, look for a service called "SSDP Discovery Service" and right-click it, select "stop," and confirm (select yes) any dialogue box that comes up telling you that "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" depend on it.
4. By now you should have two services turned off: the SSDP Discovery Service, and the Universal Plug and Play Device Host."
5. Right-click "SSDP Discovery Service" and select Properties.
6. In the drop-down box labelled "Startup type," select "Disabled."
7. Do the same with "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" and disable it.
8. Restart your computer.

Tell me how it goes. You can always delay the startup programs by a few seconds with a third-party start-up delayer...just google that.

You're welcome...I have no idea what this implies though, whether this means MS has conflicts in XP or other things... It's not a solution, but at least a workaround. :)
