Taskbar not showing applications

The taskbar doesn't show anything that's open, I have to use alt-tab. If I close all the toolbars then the taskbar goes flat and I can't stretch it back again. I cannot do system restore since I shut down the computer improperly recently, and I tried installing SP2 and that didn't help.
If I right click on the taskbar anywhere it just acts like the whole thing is the toolbar.

Just recently, my task bar has stopped showing what applications I have open, and I am forced to use ALT-TAB to switch between applications. I haven't installed anything except windows updates. I am worried that something is running on my machine, but is hiding from me by messing upmy task bar in this way.... Anyone else experiencing this, or anyone out there know how to mend this?
