Telephone won't work well when modem is plugged in

Topic says it all, eh?

I have a normal 8 mbit ADSL and some D-Link ADSL modem.
My connections from the phone line are roughly like this:

Phone Line
|
V
Extension cord
|
V
ADSL filter (I think... it goes into some ADSL splitter)
|
V
Phone

When I use my phone and the computer's on, I keep getting modem sounds in the phone. Those nasty things old 56k modems gave off. Not high volume, but it does sound bad.
Also, when I do use my phone, my connection often goes down, gets slow or disconnects when I end the call (that happens a lot).

Any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Should be.

Phone plug

splitter

one side plug in filter (phone will plug in here)

other side modem.

Use extension cables where needed.

Edit:

So it can be....

Phone plug.

Splitter.

one side filter, extension, phone.

other side exentension, modem.

I know when we got our ADSL, our phone company told us that we may need a "whole house filter", which goes on the outside phone box i believe. They said that about 1 in 10 people have a problem with staying connected, and interference. So i would call up your ADSL company and ask if they have "whole house filters".

I do have a problem with my DSL where the door buzzer (apartment) is through the phone line. We can use the phone no problem but as soon as someone buzz's our door the Internet disconnects. Annoys the hell out of me. We where told we would need a filter on the other end by the door buzzer panel but as that would be up to the owner I don't see it happening. Although the way I suggested to hook it up above is the correct method as suggested by my ISP.

Not quite sure I follow you..
As it is now, from the extension cord, I have what I think (or have been told) is the filter, which from itself connects to the splitter, that then goes to the modem. Above the splitter (or rather in the splitter, but away from the extension) is the phone plug.
So as I understand you, I've connected it correctly. That means it's probably not my connection that's flawed.
The splitter isn't really the issue, the connections to and from that thing are marked well enough.
Guess I'll have to queue for a small chat with my isp. :/

The modem shouldn't be plugged into the filter, it should be plugged directly to the phone jack. Only phones and faxes should be pluged into a phone filter.

Oh it isn't plugged into the filter. It's connected to the splitter, which in turn is connected to the phone line.
Modem -> Splitter -> Filter

Not quite sure I follow you..

I used similier fortmat with the exeption of the arrow thingys in your original question so that you could follow me.

on your wall is the phone jack.

plugged into the phone jack should next be the Y splitter.

Plugged into one jack on Y splitter should be your filter. (phone plugs in next or extension cord then phone)

Other jack on Y splitter you plug in your modem (use exension cord if needed).

This is the way it should be setup...

Wall
Socket

Splitter------ADSL Modem

ADSL
Filter

Phone

Also, some Brands/Models of phone are known to cause interferance even if you have an ADSL filter. I previously had a Panasonic Phone that would cause the ADSL to dropout when it rang.

Also try buying a new filter...it could be blown/faulty
