Tell me what to expect from this computer please

I recently created a thread looking for a gaming build that would run me $700 - $900. In that thread I received this build:

$732.92 before rebates
$707.92 after rebates

AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz ($159.99)

GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P ($139.99)
$124.99 Rebate

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 ($74.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231200

XFX Radeon HD 4850 1GB ($117.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150351

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB ($69.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320

LITE-ON Black DVD/CD Burner ($24.99)

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX Power Supply ($99.99)
($89.99 Rebate)

RAIDMAX Tornado ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($44.99)

So what can I expect from this system? How long will it be viable before I need major upgrades or to build another? Will I be able to play modern and upcoming games at high settings?

Newegg just approved me for an $8,000 credit line on its preferred account, so I am guessing I will break down pretty soon and purchase something (maybe I should just build a $1,000+ build to get the 12 months no payments deal). I just want to know what to expect from this build as I am not very familiar with the technology.

Also... if someone could be kind enough to compare this system with a similar dell/alienware/hp gaming computer so that I could look up reviews and see how much money I would be saving, I'd be very appreciative!

WARNING: The Phenom II X4 920 will NOT work in that motherboard.

If you do go the $999+ route you could do better for upgradeability, get a 4890 over that 4850,etc. (BTW, you must have excellent credit to have such a large credit line, so congrats)

That would be a similarly specced prebuilt, but with a much lower quality motherboard, memory, and power supply.(And the fact your build is AM3 as soon as you change the CPU to an AM3 and not an AM2+ CPU)

That build is crap. Couldn't play Tinker on it. :D

Seriously dude, that is a decent gaming rig, but if your budget goes up, then
so can the components.

But instead of asking "what does it compare to", ask yourself "what do I need it to do".

You could play any game you want on that system on decent settings.

For a few hundred dollars more you could move up to a Core i7 system, but
that won't play anymore games than this one. All this build really needs to be
a killer gaming rig is a better graphics card. Imo.

Ps. You killed my links when you copied the build.

You should have "Quoted" the list...

EDIT: Bomber is right, scratch either that CPU or that Board.
The Phenom II 920 and 940 are AM2+ socket chips and won't work on AM3 board.
My mistake.

Thanks for the help so far.

My computer will be used for school work as I am working toward my Master's (I am in social sciences so I won't need to run any complex programs or anything), surfing the web, and gaming.

It sounds like I can get a great gaming rig that will last me a while and meet my needs for about what my original budget was then. I will make sure to post a final build prior to ordering. I might even wait until September as there are no games I really need to play at the moment.

As a side note: I'm also currently in Northeast Ohio bomber boy. Akron/Canton area.

Nice, canton area here. You will need to switch that cpu to an AM3 socket cpu.

I would recommend a better case, such as the antec three hundred, immensely better airflow:
