Non-dynamic IP

Recently i have been working with Telnet, and i wanted to connect to my school so i could share some files over to my family pc.
I am not using the basic supplied telnet client.
I am using hyperterminal.
I enter all the commands properly and i set all the connection details properly.

The problem:
When i want to connect it comes up with a message like this:
'No dialtone'

How can i fix this?
Someone please help.

With Hyperterminal open, click... 'File' then 'Properties'.

What does it say next to "Connect Using"?

Have you tried using Microsoft Telnet?
Click Start
Click Run
Type "telnet insert_host_IP-here"
Click Ok

I am at school right now, and telnet is blocked. I will tell you later.

well you are going to telnet via TCP/IP if its over the internet, unless you are dialing in.

are you trying to accomplish any higher goal, or just want to telnet in to telnet in? You will have to have access and open ports. I can only assume your school is secured with proper routers and security settings.

No the school isnt because i searched or a Wireless connection their and i could easily get access to the net.

I want to use telnet to get into my school network of which i know the hostname. This is followed by me entering my username and password and then i wil be able to acess my school files from home.

Can you write me a guide on how to acomplish this?

well the wireless APs could be open and certain security measures could be driven by IP, meaning all clients that are DHCP (wired and wireless) are subject to these security policies. Surfing the net is probably allowed, as it is at a hot spot. Where static IP ranges may get different security policies. There are tons of ways to set things like this up.

I would personally contact a system's administartor or a help desk person so you are not in direct violation of any student policy at your school. It is always a good thing to cover your ass.

Now, if you now the IP of the open ports that allow telnet you simply just use the telnet command from the command line to start the session

example

Code:
telnet 192.168.x.x

to access the network from an outside machine you would need a wan IP. Or you could look at remote desktop, or perhaps a web based way to access your files. I work for a school district and I know that we allow access to people's H drive (home direrctory) over the internet through a web pased portal interface.
