"The Teraflops Research Chip is the latest development from the Intel® Tera-scale Computing Research Program. This chip is Intel’s first silicon tera-scale research prototype. It is the first programmable chip to deliver more than one trillion floating point operations per second (1 Teraflops) of performance while consuming very little power. This research project focuses on exploring new, energy–efficient designs for future multi–core chips, as well as approaches to interconnect and core–to–core communications. The research chip implements 80 simple cores, each containing two programmable floating point engines—the most ever to be integrated on a single chip."

I came across this link from an advertisement on some random website. If you think that quad core CPU's are sweet, then check out this article. They have a chip with 80 cores, consuming only 62 watts.

Well even if we invent a cpu like taht we can't even take the full advantage of it look at the quad-core versus dual-core

If they were made, then people would figure out ways to utilize it. Who would have imagined in the early 90s that we would be making games that utilized dual core processors? Who would have thought processors and computers would be as powerful as they are.
 
yeah but seriously, how can you make a computer much faster when quads get ultilized with 20,000RPM hard drives and 4GB of RAM?

boot times would be instant, software loading would be instant, everything would be absolutely instant. only thing needing updating would be the GPU

As programs get more and more complex, greater power will be needed to execute them. So things will not be instant. Processors do so many calculations per second, so having extra cores for all those calculations will make production better and allow for more complex programs to be created. And don't tell me that programs are beyond becoming more complex, because they could be so much more varied then they are now. We are limited, and still will be limited even if we get these 80 core chips.
 
Wow this is taking Moore's law to far. I think people need to kow about this law to actully see how much advancing we will do in the next 10 years.

Everything has to be upgraded sometime, and it is almost always electronic devices that get the biggest increase.

Two, three years ago the thought of a duel cored processer was just a myth, and now since that there has been, 2,4, and now 80 cores added.

Eventually, I believe that there will be 3 sections of memory: 10+GB of super high speed Ram, maybe around 30+GB (or a whole lot more, like 50-75GB more likely) of normal speed Ram, and then huge hard drives with 2+TB of space for storage (that are faster than today's hard drives). Hard drives just can't get that much information fast enough, in my opinion.
 
Jet, the devices will all be able to access data faster. It all has to balance. It is like having a Celeron D with a 8800GTX SLI and 4Gb of memory. We don't see it and nor does the companies producing the devices therefor they would not do it.

I think in two years you will see 20,000RPM, SATA3 (6Gbps), 5Tera drives. Look 6 years ago 10Gig was quite good, now 320gig is good.

in 1999, a 20gb was average. not 10 gb.
 
i saw a 16 gb (ram) custom computer on ebay with a 2,000 gb hard drive...
it was insane and so was the price.
 
About the 80 cores:

Doesn't it seem a bit strange to have a number like 80? I would think it would be a multiple of two. Maybe 64 or 128 cores. It just struck me as an odd number (well its actually an even number, but you know what I mean).

It's not like your dual core processor. Each core is only 2 floating point engines which is why the package is so small. It's still a feat, no question about it.
