Is it possible to find out if a PSU will fail? I did some searching, but not sure if it's what I'm looking for.
Well, thats a quality power supply so i dont think it would spontaneously fail unless you are experiencing symptoms of oncoming failure like low +12v voltages, overheating psu, etc. Why exactly are you asking?(Just wondering)
I'm just wondering. I'm starting to work on backing up my drives, with setting up two 500GB drives in RAID and stuff.
Well you can just make a back of your whole files so that you won't have to worry on sudden power supply failure.
I want to keep my backup drives (The RAID 1 array), always connected so I can do automatic backups. Will the RAID drives or even my main drive get affected by a PSU fail?
hm... Well so you are worried about it because it's warranty is already voided? Well you can star on saving up then if you think that it's tarting to get faulty. :good:Well, I'm not going to RAID the drives, I'm just going to back it up on one of the 500GB drives. And I got my PSU, 700watt OCZ GameXstream, from a friend, and the warranty was voided, since the fan was replaced, and don't know if it was tampered with at all.
Purcahse a UPS if you're that worried.
I got my current PSU, a 700watt OCZ GameXstream from a friend who let another friend use it before me. When I got it, the warranty was void since the fan was replaced. I'm wondering though if it was tampered with at all..? Probably just paranoia, but I have been using it since October of 08 and nothing really has happened, so..
Well just relax a bit loosen up a power supply failure won't fry any component in the blink of an eye well it's not possible but if you really that worry then just buy a external hard drive then use it to store your files so that it won't be affected if there is any psu failure.I got my current PSU, a 700watt OCZ GameXstream from a friend who let another friend use it before me. UPS is used for powering a computer when there's a power outtage. It's not going to prevent his power supply from failing.
I just don't want my PSU or drive failing, causing my drive to get damaged, and end up erasing my drive and RAID array.

No one said it would, however a UPS will prevent power failure induced data corruption of hard drives as per the OP's original concern.
Are you shitting me?![]()
A power supply failure can cause catastrophic hardware failures in other components. That means, ram, gpu, cpu etc trashed.
Your options:
1. Choose an array type that will prevent data loss OR
2. Replace current PSU with a quality alternative with known operational status http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005 OR
3. Purcahse UPS to allow for controlled shut down in primary power failure situations (such as PSU failure)
Number 2 has my vote if you're concerned, else number 1. If you intend to keep an array with limited data protection qualities, you will need to do 2 and 3.
