Any simple methods to test to see if a mobo is fried or in working order, aside from actually installing in and running it?

Umm....why, what do you suspect is wrong with it?

Someone gave me a MB and they claim that it stopped working for them. The person has little computer knowledge, and I suspect that something else may have failed as a possibility. If I can test it, and it works, I'd like to build off of it.

If I were to install it, would I risk frying other healthy parts, if the mobo is no good?

I doubt it. Take a look at the caps and see what shape they are in. Look closely for bulging or blown caps.

Whats a cap?

A capacitor. Those popcan-shaped things you see all around the upper half of the motherboard. They will be either black or blue with silver tops on them.
