THE AMAZING OPERATING SYSTEM WAR

Rules: each one must choose an operating system and bring up to 3 arguments in favor or against the chosen operating system per post. Each valid positive or negative argument will add or remove a point from that OS. The winner is the OS with the highest number of points.

Note: Positive arguments should be marked with a + and negative with a - to make counting them easier.

I'll start:

Ubuntu:
+ free
+ very secure

Ubuntu
-when you want to change something, you have to do everthing yourself.
-has some serious hardware incompatibillity porblems. (unless you can write drivers yourself.)

Windows
+Compatible with a load of hardware
+run games
+rather easy to use
-due to beeing common, its the OS the most viri etc get made for
-can sometimes be annoying
-Standard instal has quite some things you dont need.

(I could go on a bit longer i think, but since you said 3 per post... I'll not go too far then :P )

So it's Ubuntu 0 and Windows 0

Windows
- most new features are useless
(Instead of concentrating on fixing annoying problems like remembering the last folder or last file type in Notepad, they keep adding new and mostly useless stuff like sidebar and Aero)
- unstable
- unsecure

Ubuntu
-doesnt come with anything

-stable (whats the fun in having something completely reliable? might aswell drive a lexus then! :P ok, only joking)

however, I dont think you can call "- most new features are useless" a new one, since its, well as far as I can see the same a "-Standard instal has quite some things you dont need." :)

tough, i have to say i find these OS wars a bit pointless really. I've tried Ubuntu for example. might be a good OS, but it was totally useless for my pc. (I use my pc for gaming only basically.) and I dare to say, windows is only less stable, because they are (or at least try) to stay compatible with all hardware.
take Mac OS for example, only compatible with, well apple hardware, wich isnt really a lot. so you have to admit, for what windows is actually doing, its doing that pretty good. (aka, enabling people who dont know anything at all about computers to actually use one. and you can instal it on just about any computer aswell. )
also, for calling windows very unsecure.. I doubt its more unsecure than Linux to be honest. but just because much more people are using windows rather than linux, there is no point in hacking linux instead of windows. (since hacking windows would give you acces to hack more pc's basically. ) now, I do admit that is a downside, however, I dont think you can blame a OS for beeing popular to be honest.

Oh man...this thread is not gonna end well.

Windows (7)
+ adding useful stuff like gadgets, better wireless connectivity, a better way to browse recently opened files, search in the start menu, better performance, .iso image burning support, most used codecs built into install and new ways to maximise, half screen or clear all windows on screen etc. etc.
+ Runs(well) on a wide range of hardware, from my quad core desktop to my single core EEE PC
+ Easy to get things done

- The occasional hang
- Windows media player (easily replaced with VLC and a stripped install of Winamp)

Hopefully this doesn't end in a flame war... anyhow.

Ubuntu
+ configurability
+ great hardware compatibility
- ugly

Windows Vista
+ looks nice
+ compatibility
- bad security

OS X Leopard
+ great interface
+ security
- legally only runs on Apple hardware

That's right... I like all the major OSes, but they all have little problems.

ha ha

Linux:

-has compatibility issues
-package managers can be a pain in the ass
-has too many flavors to choose from, gets confusing
-no standardized form of the shell, many commands use different syntax
+free
+open source
+stable for the most part
-crashes
-harder for average user to use
-open source driver support sucks

Windows:

-lots of security flaws
-costs way too much
-feature limiting by different versions
+plays video games
+fairly easy to use
-lots of viruses, malware, IE sucks my *****
-useless changes from version to version, why move around control panels?
+wide variety of hacks, tweaks, etc for your OS all found on the net
-if you have to tweak your OS to work out of the box its not a good OS
+has the most third party software available
-has lots of crappy third party software
-crashes
-Gates and Ballmer are tools

OS X

-Only runs on Macs, that is only a minus to some people
-Apple is slow on updates
+easy to use
+security of Unix
-Apple takes time to patch their security holes
-cost of the machine (this is highly debatable and subjective, but will put as minus for now)
-crashes
+apple script, automator, unix shell under the hood, best automation you can have
-less third party software
+less crappy third party software
+most standard features on a computer/OS
-Jobs is a tool

NOTE* I put down that all of them crash

Winders:
+ Most support for it;
+ Games are much more common (Inc. platforms);
- Horrific resource management/bogs down;
- Expensive and confusing licence model;

Linux:
+ For the most part it's FOSS;
+ Extensive amount of variants;
+/- Frequent software updates - this is secure but bloody well annoying!
- Support is good but is based on but not-live forums generally (IRC isn't brill for help);
- Crashes not generally explained;

OS X:
+ Interface is very slick;
+ Built on BSD, makes it VERY stable;
+ Two versions, one for the desktop, one for the server;
+ Improving support;
- Crash logs not exactly helpful;
- Hardware lock;
- Slightly iffy image over here;

Uummmm............interesting. don't stop now. Im interested.
good job!

don't hold back, say whats on your mind.

+ Ubuntu has alot of open source programs
+ Ubuntu is secure
+ all distributions of Ubuntu are FREE making people wallet seem a bit more full.
+Ubuntu uses firefox instead of IE

How is that for the ubuntu section

Windows:
+ Easy to develop on
+ Gives many people jobs
+ Easy to understand how to use
+ VERY easy installation (compared to other OS's)
+ Dual-Booting is made quite easy to run with other OS's
- Takes up lots of memory (slows down the computer compared to other OS's)

OK I have seperated these into 3 categories and here are the results so far:

Linux (0)
Windows (-2)
Mac OSX (0)

Looks like Windows is losing! Well, it seems I would make a killing if I went into business selling computers pre-installed with linux!! I would save quite a bit of money on the software alone hehe

Windows:
+ Gives many people jobs

lol hahah that one is very true.
Mine

winders :

+ Almost all people talks about windows
+ Extremely easy, matter of fact too easy , so easy that you can crash the machine yourself
+ Developers focus mainly on windows to make apps
- BSOD
- BSOD :P
- Bunch of sh*tty error codes that Microsoft lost track of :D
- Registry hacks, remote attacks and a whole lot more

The basic problem with Linux is that the Windows software won't run on it. You are limited to applications available for Linux and, frankly, there aren't that many. I like Linux personally because it is so stable but it doesn't work for me because the apps I need for my business don't run on it. I don't think any of the other issues matter in comparison to that one.

The other option would be Mac O/S. It is a Unix based O/S just like Linux and shares the same advantages. There is a lot more commercial software available for the Apple than for a Linux machine. So if stability is the goad, the Apple O/S should resolve it.

Linux CAN run windows applications using Wine or other emulation software, and it works as long as it's not a 3D game.

Windows 7 (build 7022)
+ Superbar is the best thing to happen to the taskbar since its creation (and if you don't like it you can change it back so this is still a plus)
+ Usually the first OS that apps are aimed for so it tends to be better supported (example: Hamachi)
+ almost any visual part of the OS can be changed (www.wincustomize.com)
- no Classic Start Menu (I personally despise it and can't figure out how it is more productive but this is a - to some people)
the two below are to Windows in general
- peoples ignorance to computers can cause it to be run down with tons of useless apps
- usually takes a service pack before the major bugs are gone and things run smoothly.

It can run a handful of applications. To say that it can run Windows applications in a generic sense is optimistic at best.

If you need to run both Linux and Windows, then dual boot is the way to go.

(Just making blatant contrasts/comparisons you dont need to include this post in the game)

Windows:
- Debugging is a pain in the ass (relying on Microsoft to fix it for you)
+Customization/Appearance
- GUI indirect and time wasting
- Community isn't as knowledgable (generally speaking you run into more users that don't know much since it has a larger user base)
-Trojans/Viruses/Malware/Spyware much much much much more common than Linux.

Linux:
+ Debugging is rather simple
+Customization/Appearance (I'd say my desktop looks pretty good)
+ Free
+ Terminal allows quick actions
- Running proprietary software
- Running games (some emulated through Wine but not many, nor is it guaranteed to work well without configuration)
+SECURE
