the best choice of opteron processors?

i am almost done building my new gaming computer,

i want a cpu that will fit nicely, i have thought about it long enough,

and now i wthink i want an opteron,,

i have 3 models on my mind, for socket 939

a: opteron 165
b: opteron 148
c: something else??

its not like a server or anything though, just for my home gaming computer...

I don't really like fx or x2 series,.,,, may be intel might be ok too...

um, the motherboard i want to get is: http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=787&l1=3&l2=15&l3=236

but i also wonder, if this motherboard will support opteron cpus...

I highly doubt that the mobo will support opteron's. Look at the compatability list that asus gives, i dont see any opterons listed. BUT, it is possible... Also if your buying Opterons i suggest getting a Opteron X2.

both of these CPU's support 939 socket but however ther is a version of opteron 148 for socket 940, between these two procs opteron 165 (duel core) costs around $475, a $100 more then the opteron 148 (single core)

tell us your budget and your intentions with that procesor and will try to make our best suggestion

He wants it for gaming....

for gaming i would highly suggest an amd X2, it will outperform any cpu out there in gaming except the mighty FX-57 aka the king of OC, x2 series is for everything, i mean its for gaming, multitasking, video editing etc.

why dont u like fx and x2 series, they r0k, did they do something to u or your relatives?

i heard that ppl have gone into 3ghz w/ opteron which is why i amde a thread asking 4400x2 or 175 opty for gaming. I would think a opteron oc'd would be better than a x2.

Not yet flip, pound per pound the amd 64 single core still (only slightly) edges out the x2 series. That will change in the future (not too distant)

Who would overclock a server cpu?
The same people who would overclock a desktop server. The opteron 165 has been shown to overclock very well and is very competative with more expensive dual cores x2's

lots of people i hear,
from this forum, eg: http://www.computerforum.com/showthr...cked+opter on
and well, even on ebay, they tell us that they overclock an opteron cpu.
You should have read more closely....the Opteron is only outstanding in gamging when it is Extemely Overclocked(High eng Opterons)...since you dont know how to overclock and probably wont overclock it, it wouldnt suit your needs. Not to mention it wont even perform as well in a game as lower-end x2.

well, i have all the components to overclock i think.

and if i do get an opteron, i should overclock it along with my rams if necessary.

I know, but you just dont (Overclock to 3.0GHZ) you need to have experience in what your doing. Since youve never overclocked a cpu before i wouldnt suggest you go and overclock and opteron and possibly damage the cpu and loose all your money. Read Overclocking 101 and then overclock and much cheaper cpu just to gain some experience.

you are right, i will try overclocking my old sampron 2900+ 2.04Ghz and see what results i get.

right now, playing with computer became my sorce of fun,

and i want to get this old computer upgraded,
new video card(agp)
more ram. thinking of cheap 1gb ultra ram
and a new hard drive, 250gb
mayyyy be new case+psu and even water cooling, instead of buying my self a new cpu+ actual new computer..
w/e

Sound pretty fun, but you have about $1000 of components lieing around you....what are you gonna do with those?

well, i can just get a opteron in like a month for my new computer :D...

bit of a waste though.
O, so you want to upgrade this current computer and still make the new computer complete? If so, do it....I just thought u didnt want to spend any extra money.

$300~400 for upgrading and may be like $300~500 for my opteron...

and in the future, i can move over 250gb hard drive and watercooling over to my new computer.

True, but then I would invest in a GOOD watercooling kit seeing as you want to put it into your new system.
