hi guys..
I have a question in my mind, would u help me to find the answer?
the question is, "what's the best free internet security?"

thanks a lot.

good ol fashion common sense

other than that I trust Zonealarm, easy to use and it keeps the nasties out as long as you actually pay attention to the firewall prompts. Once it learns all of the programs you use on a daily basis, it is pretty unintrusive. If you want antivirus, AVG is a pretty good contender.

I use;

Avast! Home Edition
Malwarebytes
Spybot Search & Destroy

I use this combination on all 4 of our computers. Runs smooth, doesn't take a lot of resources and real-time protection :)

PS: The programs are all free and easy to use.

i used to recommend Kaspersky IS 2009 But ive recently purchased a licence for Eset Smart security and its much better, checks for updates all the time,no need to restart after update and doesnt use much memory it all.

ive found it to be alot more effective then Kaspersky ever was.

The best security is layered in many layers. There is no one method that is guaranteed or best.

You will have to do some research to understand how these technologies work, and I suggest you hit up the respective Wikipedia page in regard to each technology.

Router - should support NAT, and should support SPI firewall. If you have to forward any services to your computer from your router, use non standard ports. Bots and hackers use scripts to automate hacking, but their programmed scripts assume that you are running said services on the standard default port. Configure them for non standard ports so things like that hit your router, scan for the port and find it closed and they move on.

If you really want to get into it you can run a softwall box in between your modem/router and your computer. These are typically full blown firewall systems and can block/allow/deny whatever services you want. You can also run a proxy at this point and require authentication to proceed on through your network. They would then have to hack your password to get through.

Which brings up my next point. Use strong passwords. Do not use real words, use caps, symbols and numbers in your passwords. Make them at least 8 characters. Weak passwords can be exploited by dictionary attacks.

On the client machine run some sort of anti virus/spwyare/malware app. There are many out there to choose from. Nod32 comes highly recommended because it has such a small memory footprint, meaning it won't hog up your resources. Software firewalls are another good option. However, I really recommend you get a program like little snitch, and monitor your services on your computer and what they are doing. If you have a service running that should not be and it is getting network activity your machine has probably been compromised. In the end the best kind of defense is human interaction because software, programs, and especially Windows can be hacked and exploited. Linux and Unix can as well. If someone hacks your machine due to a weak password then they can install all sorts of things on any system regardless of OS and take over your computer.

AVG by far is the best now days, free and simple and clean and does not hog resources, try it everyone :)
