The first website ever to be made!

The internet wasnt originally developed just for the purpose of having websites, that was a bonus that came later. I believe it was developed as a way for data to be transferred by the government (or something along those lines). I cant remember where I heard/read this so it could be a total lie lol.

No. The internet was originally only accessed by Govt/Business/Edu and the purpose was to "share" information among professionals.

What I meant is that my initial use of online was that I actually did "online" banking in '90 via dial-up. It was just line feeds of text. It wasn't until '91 that I signed up with Prodigy at the start of the "Consumer/Non-Commercial" Web (or whatever they called it then. :P) I've been on many dial-ups ever since and only in the past couple of years went cable.

I thought it was originally made for the army.

I retrieved this paragraph from Wikipedia...

The opening of the network to commercial interests began in 1988. The US Federal Networking Council approved the interconnection of the NSFNET to the commercial MCI Mail system in that year and the link was made in the summer of 1989. Other commercial electronic e-mail services were soon connected, including OnTyme, Telemail and Compuserve. In that same year, three commercial Internet service providers (ISP) were created: UUNET, PSINet and CERFNET. Important, separate networks that offered gateways into, then later merged with, the Internet include Usenet and BITNET. Various other commercial and educational networks, such as Telenet, Tymnet, Compuserve and JANET were interconnected with the growing Internet. Telenet (later called Sprintnet) was a large privately funded national computer network with free dial-up access in cities throughout the U.S. that had been in operation since the 1970s.

Telnet...that's what I used for banking! Phew...I forgot ALL about that! ;)

according to this, the first website was nxoc01.cern.ch and the first webpage was http://nxoc01.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

The information on that website is wrong, especially when referencing who "invented" the web... (Don't you all know it was Al Gore? :P :rolleyes) The original TCP/IP protocol, or the coding that TCP/IP is based off of, was developed by Xerox in the late 70's, called XNS.

EDIT: Sorry, Xerox developed XNS aimilar to the TCP protocol which was originally developed by DARPA.
