The guy at the computer shop thinks I need a bigger case than the Antec 900 2

Hello :-)

I have two problems with my intended set up according to the computer store assistant. He says my chosen case, the Antec 900 2, will not be very roomy for my two radeon 6870 gpu's. He also said non-modulated power supplies have shorter cables than modulated, and won't reach far enough up the case. I had chosen the 950tx and was so keen on it and it's not modulated. These are two products I was really really keen on. I could go to the Antec 1200 without too much money issue, and I would love a great big spacious case, but if the corsair 950tx cables won't reach in a smaller case, they sure won't reach in that case. I'm set on the corsair 950tx. Anyone know if this guy is wrong? Thank you all :-)

What parts are available to you?

Those cards will fit in the 902 just fine. You may be able to find a better psu than the 950tx for the price, though...

The part about modular psu's having longer cables is utter bullcrap. That's completely dependent on the individual PSU in question. (It's "modular", not "modulated", by the way)

edit: Here is a picture of a 5850 in an Antec 902. The 6870 is 1/2" shorter. You'll have plenty of room. I think that the sales dude is trying to get you to buy a more expensive case.

Thanks. The 950tx is crazy cheap for how good it is. I can't find better for the same price. I really want a corsair and that's the one I like most :-) yes I'm posting from my phone and I always muck something up when I do so xP thank you very much. I thought it would be weird for a PSU like the 950tx which is intended for gaming enthusiasts among others, to not reach in a big case.

On a side note, if I were to get the Antec 1200, do you think the PSU I have chosen would reach? And do you think the case would be a better fit, and cooler? Thank you :-)

Out of curiosity, what other power supplies are available to you? And how much are you getting that one for?

Reason being, the XFX Black Edition 850W is usually about the same price. That system would struggle to use more than 600W, so even a 700-750W PSU would give adequate breathing space. At this point, the quality of the power matters more than the quantity, and the XFX walks all over the Corsair in that respect.

edit: +1 to the extension cables

O okay. Yeah, im getting told i dont need that much power a lot and i know i dont, i just read this thing that said power supplies never actually are the wattage they say, and when they are hot from gaming, they can't do the full wattage load that they are, and you need to think of it as actually only coping with 70% the wattage it is marked as. So when you buy a psu, get 30% more or something. i dont really know. lol. I just kinda want to get a corsair, and i could probably get the hx850, but tbh, the tx950 is underpriced because corsair have marked it as bronze when its actually silver, and in reviews it just always gets like 9.5/10, and is just really good value. I will overclock to 4 ghz hopefully too.

O sorry i forgot to mention pricing. Its all different because they cost more in New Zealand, but if you know the US prices im sure it is relevant. Same price rises and falls between differing models i'd say. Thanks :-)

I didnt know you could use extension cables either, so thanks Jevery, and i laughed out loud at pegasus, idk why, i just found that astronomically funny xD

The whole thing about PSU's only delivering 70% is only applicable to crappy power supplies. The units we're talking about here can all deliver 100% of their rated power.

However, you should give yourself some headroom anyway, which is why I suggested an 850W and not a 600W.

Pricespy.co.nz shows the 850HX to be about the same price as the 950TX over there. I'd get that instead. It'll perform better, and allow for better cable management since it's modular.

Thanks for going to the effort to check that for me! okay, i'm sold on the more quality and modular idea. However i am looking into gold standard. The ax 850 by corsair is gold. it says 90% efficiency at 50% load. What does that mean? Thanks heaps.

Also, does this chart on this link, near the bottom of the page indicate that the cooler master haf x is good at cooling GPU's, but not good at cooling CPU's? Sorry about my noobishness. Im deciding between a case like the haf x and an antec 1200. Looking for really good cooling. Thanks, and sorry to be a pain xP

I don't really care for either case(for aesthetic reasons), but the HAF X looks to be the nicer of the two cases. As for the modular vs. nonmodular debate, I would go with modular simply because you can remove the excess cables that you don't need so that you have less clutter and easier cable management.

I really don't care for the Antec 1200 either. That is what I have now. One reason is the way the hard drives are mounted. Just to remove one hard drive, you have to remove 8 thumb screws and 4 regular screws, that is if you used all the screws. Also I have a ATI HD 5870 card and you can not install the hard drives in front of the card. I don't know how long the 5870 is compared to the 6870. Why don't the manufactures list that in their specs?

I have the Corsair 850HX as well and modular is the way to go. It helps keep your system looking a little neater. The only problem I have with it is the cpu power cable was too short to go behind the motherboard but like Jevery said you can just buy some extensions and problem solved.
