The Last Straw (Draw, w/e)

This is it. I have finally gotten fed up with abit for the last time. Granted they make some pretty nice boards but I have finally had it. My IC7-MAX3 which I already had replaced once and have had problems with ever since it came back. So now with the most recent problem; BOTH IDE chains have failed. That's right, I don't know how, I don't know why. All I know is it's not the HDD, not the Bios, not the CPU, not the CD roms, not the Gfx, and not the PSU. I have swapped all the parts in every manner possible to find out what it was and finally decided it had to be them because the computer will POST fine with no HDD (HDD works fine in other comp) but will either
A. Sometimes POST
B. Post, then restart, then keep a solid HDD activity light with blank screen
C. POST, get into windows, work for about 10 minutes, then try to restart, then go to option B.
or D. POST, and not detect anything at all (meaning no IDE detection at all)

So my question to all of you that have been here the longest with the most experience in AMD and OTHER mobo brands; what should I do, meaning, what new mobo and chip should I buy when I sell this (if I sell it). Intel and Abit have finally been wiped from my slate forever.

I don't know how
Then how can you be sure? :)

Sounds like a BIOS issue :)

1. AMD hasnt made consumer mobos for some time now :)
2. You're not gonna have a good time installing a P4 into an AMD board :P
3. ASUS

Thank you for taking my question and twisting it. What I meant to say was. I am no longer going to buy INTEL or ABIT, respectively for cpu and mobo. Asus has been on my ____list for a while now and will prolly never get off. For AMD I was wondering what a good chip would be. AND I know it's the IDE because the reset the BIOS AND re-flashed it. Also this board has died once before so I really don't care what it was that died as long as ABIT RMA'ed it (which they decided to do).

P.S. Thanks for the reply, no one else seemed to know/care.

LOL no problem. Playing devils' advocate is fun. On a more serious note, technicalities and stuff are important cuz too many people willl make decisions based on horribly inaccurate assumptions :)

If you stop and think about it though (with some very well documented exceptions of course), if a company was really really that bad ... would they still be in business? (especially big names like Intel, ASUS and Abit).

Have you checked the IDE cables? Cuz its damn near impossible for hdd controllers to become "corrupt" (because they are physically implemented in hardware). Are they SATA drives?

I put in new cables and even a new HDD (new from box) still no boot and no beep. This was tried with nothing else plugged into the system except GFX, CPU, HDD, Memory. (I even tried it without memory.) I have also tried it with a different GFX (that I know works) Dif. memory, and a dif. CPU. It would not boot in any type of combination. The only thing left for it to be would be the IDE chains. (I carry it around a lot and it goes through a whole lotta shakin')

Is it a SATA drive? (i.e., possibly overclocked the SATA controller?)
I don't think it is since he said IDE drive which for most people (the people who don't know better) that means PATA. Even though I just read the original post where he says its not PSU, I still think it is :P

Not to sure how it can be seeing as how I'm using the PSU right now without any problems. Doesn't really matter anymore though I've already sent the board back and should be receiving a new one soon.

P.S. I'd have known if it was the PSU, I've gone through enough to know when those suckers die/are having problems.

Are you sure all the correct settings are enabled in the BIOS when the board was returned to you? In award/Phoenix BIOS you should enable integrated IDE peripherals and the IDE channels are best set to auto. Also check the boot sequence. These are very simple tests which are easy to overlook since it is unusual to need to alter BIOS settings when they have been setup correctly.

Yes and seeing as how I have been working with computers for over 10 years I know how to check such simple things that "may have been overlooked". The board has since been RMA'ed and I have a new one right now that is running fine. The old board had taken much a beating (from hauling) and I am guessing that is what borked it.

P.S. Admin/mod please lock topic, problem has been fixed.

Meh ok. I always figured they could start another thread if they have a similar topic, I never find it easy to answer a question that's been piggy backed on another thread.
