The more RAM the faster the computer??

Your motherboard probably doesn't support it. And unless you are doing really RAM-intensive programs, probably not.
 
Yeah i guess your right about the motherboard.

Any examples of RAM-intensive programs??

I mostly use sound based applications and might be running alot of them at 1 time. also im looking to start some graphics work aswel.
 
What motherboard do you have?

An example would be ANSYS, which uses as much RAM as you have, (whether it is 256MB or 16GB). That is a 3D modeling program.

With sound-based applications, you probably wouldn't see much of a difference. How much RAM are you using with a lot of running programs?
 
How much ram you require depends on how many applications you are going to run at the same time. I would GENERALLY say that 1Gb of ram with windows XP is going to give pretty reasonable performance, but 2Gb of ram is best. I don't think anything over 2Gb is worth the price you pay. You're better off getting 2Gb of decent quality ram, than 4Gb of reasonable quality ram. The only time I ever "need" 2Gb of ram is when I am playing Battlefield 2, if only to make the map loading time faster.
 
A computer usally reaches it's limit to the amount of RAM and the actual performace increase depending on the processor, OS, and such. With XP, 1GB is probably plenty for your typical use. 2GB probably wouldn't help that much. 512MB works fine, but under heavy useage the swap file would kick in(though I'm currently running my laptop without the swap file...)
 
I think that 2GB is probably the optimum you should need. I have 1GB of RAM, and certain games like BF2 could definately use a tad bit more.

Also, when Vista comes, it'll probably be better to be using 2GB ;)
 
No, if you add too much ram it will slow down the computer, not make it faster. But i agree, 2 gigs would be plenty for anything. 1 gig is enough for me.

Actually, you could have a server motherboard with 32GB of RAM, and store everything in the RAM, now that would be fast :D
 
After a certain amount of RAM is added, the Law of Diminishing Returns kicks in. I personally wouldn't bother with more than 2GB.

I know I sound really dumb, but what is the Law of Deminishing Returns?
 
I know this isn't the technical answer, but it kind of makes sense that if you put almost unused components onto a computer, it will only drain the power/resources.
 
Well looks like i dont have to explain it, Ovenmaster covered it well.

And you wouldnt be able to store everything on a server in 32gb, i cant even store windows and a few programs with 32gb. Thats why servers usually have 4 250gb hdds, they need the space. That was just an example, i have no idea how many hdds servers have, pry more then that.

Do you really think I was being serious?

And servers can have as many hard drives as you want. Just depends on what type of server.
 
Yea, id expect a server to have 100s of top end highest volume hdds. To store profiles, settings, and all that crap in em.

Makes me wonder how much space an uploading server like Imageshack would need, id say more then 1,000tb, cuz doesnt Imageshack keep the uploaded data for so many months and then it gets deleted?

With more ram? Yea, but after 2gb there isnt a difference, cuz you dont need anything more. At least not now, and i dont imagine in the future you wil, not for a little while anyway (next year maybe). But really, if you install more then 2gb, its a waste of money.
