The need for speed

Hi, this is my first post and not sure if it is the right place, so I apologize if I have incorrectly done this. I do not have a lot of pc knowledge so my terminology may be somewhat illiterate. I live in Brisbane Australia. My pc seems to be slow in opening up windows on websites and a lot of other activity, but not everything. I have a Dell system purchased in 2002. What I can tell you is this: it runs Windows XP home edition 2002 with service pack 3. It has a Celeron R CPU 2.40 GHz. It has 2 sticks of ram @ 0.99 GB. If you want any more info, please dumb it down and explain to me how I source the info you require. It is currently using 18GB of space with 57GB free on the hard drive. Do I need a new mother board or perhaps a new CPU? Could it be a virus problem? How do I go about determining which it is. I realize most will probably say just buy a new pc, however I am on a small disability pension and cannot afford to. Can anyone help me out? Thank you in advance.

well you have pretty good specs for windows xp it should not be slow at all, i recommend you defragmenting your computer, deleting, your internet history, and running a disk clean up, also download this program and run it to clean your regrestry and fix any errors

http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

i also use this one too

http://www.eusing.com/Window_Washer/Window_Washer.htm

you could also go to start >> run>> then type in msconfig

to to services, and press hide all micrsoft services, if you dont youll regret it,
then disable the ones you dont use,

then go to start up and disable the ones you dont use too, these are the programs that startup when you turn on your computer, you dont need any of them unless you have a virus program or somthing i disable all of mine because i dont need any

the slowness can be solved easily with new RAM if you need help finding where and what to buy I will help you by telling you to go to

www.crucial.com there you can have to sire scan your computer and it will tell you what RAM you have and give you few choices of some that you can buy right then.

Its not all that expensive either for good quality RAM

He already has 1gb of memory, most people don't even use that much. An entry level person using a computer for email, web surfing and office documents will never use 1gb of memory. He either has a problem with the processor, which celerons suck anyway, or he has malware infections.

Make sure you are deleting your temporary internet files, if you let those accumulate they will drastically slow your system down. Also, check your fragmentation of the hard drive, might need to defrag. Check the msconfig utility for any programs that you don't need running on bootup that could be slowing you down. To do this, click on run, type "msconfig" without the quotes and then click on startup tab. If you need help just write down what you have starting and post it back here so we can tell you what to disable. Your celeron processor isn't the greatest in the world. It might be 2.4 ghz but the cache sucks. You might also have malware slowing your system down. Download Malwarebytes Antimalware here.
Make sure you fully update it before running and then post back the log that it displays at the end. There could be a bunch of reasons why your system has slowed down, including corrupt windows. Some people have to reinstall every 6 months or so just to get their speed back.

I'd suggest upgrading you do the following:

1.) Download SpyBot Search & Destroy
2.) Download LavaSoft Ad-Aware
3.) Download Malware Bytes (http://www.download.com/Malwarebyte...4572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button)

All of the programs are free. Install the programs, and have them do full system scans. Enable Spybot's TeaTimer feature. Do full system scans for with both programs, and wait for the results. Once finished, check everything it gives you and click on the "Delete All" or "Remove" buttons and hit yes to delete everything it has detected..

If you don't have an anti-virus program, I'd suggest buying the following for only $9.99 - it's the best:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=208973468

Next install and run the virus scan. If it detects anything, let the anti-virus take care of it / remove it. You might have to check it off and remove it like in the programs above..

And finally, once you're done that, your PC should be running a bit faster...but in any case, upgrade your RAM. Buy 2 sticks of 1GB DDR RAM, whatever kind of your PC can support. You can check out what kind of RAM your PC will support, and its pricing at the following site:
www.computermemoryoutlet.com - this site has the BEST prices by far.

So you'll total 2GB of RAM. It's pretty easy to install but if you can't do it yourself, local PC shops will do it for you for $25.

Then defrag your disk and run disk clean-up! :) And download CC Cleaner and run that for both applications and registry. ;)
