The Perfect Balence

I've been having a problem like this for a while: what is the best comprimise between being able to download the game files and demos I want, keeping my computer safe, and not having an antivirus protection program slow down my internet conection and CPU. Maybe there isn't such a magical way of comprimising the three, but what do you guys do? Also what sites are "safe" to download things from? Is 3dgamers safe because thats where I've been downloading almost all my files from.

I have Norton anti-virus and I keep it up and running all the time. I have downloaded many things and it does not slow down my internet connection. It has saved me multiple times from viruses since I have downloaded many...... as for download sites, try simply www.download.com.... they are safe and reliable.
