The Sweet Spot build , your input appreciated

Hi, first post on here, I have been reading the threads and doing research. I would like to build my own computer and I am trying to decide what I would like. I was hoping that a couple of you might tell me what you think would be best. I have seen some of the recommendations by maroon and intelcrazy and I have read the 101 threads. I am currently using a 6 year old laptop and it’s driving me crazy because it doesent seem to have enough RAM to run more than one application at once. If I am burning dvd’s everything else freezes up. Forget about video encoding. I used to be a regular video game player and figured if I am going to get a new computer might as well be able to play video games on it. I don’t need to be able to play the latest FPS in the best mode. I would probably be happy picking up outdated games out of the discount bin. I still would like a video card in the computer though. Don’t need a tv tuner. So what I think I am looking for is the best bang for my buck. The sweet spot between price and performance. I am cheap but I don’t mind paying if it’s actually worth it. I don’t know anything about computers except what I read in these threads. A friend of mine said he can help me build it. So to reiterate I want to be able to
- run lots of applications at once without freezing, burn dvd’s while downloading through bit torrent and playing a video game. ( from what I have read it seems like any computer I buy will satisfy this requirement)
- Would like to play video games but don’t want or need anything high end or the best, be able to say I actually have a video card ,just to be able to play EA sports games and Warcraft and such, not Crysis or any FPS
- View and edit photos from my digital SLR camera
- Listen to music in stereo only
I have been looking at the E440 cause it seems pretty cheap and building from there but if you say an Intel quad core will make me happy for some reason unknown to me please suggest it. My apologies if my post is like many others on here. Price range is whatever it would take to make me happy . like I said I dont mind paying for the best deal but dont want to pay for what I dont need.
Thanks in advance
