The Whole Wireless Thing?

I have a standard desktop pc with 2mb cable broadband connection. A family member that I live with is thinking about getting a laptop with built in wireless.

What would I need to buy in order for them to share my 2mb cable modem connection?

a wireless router, which you can get at any local retail store (staples, bestbuy, circuitcity, radioshack, wal-mart, ect) Average cost is probably abour $30-$50.

it is worth investing in a netgear i am happy with mine just be carefulk about the neighbours though if ure really close they may be able to get a weak signal

which is why you should disable "Broadcast SSID", and enable WEP.

I have a Belkin and it works great, havent had any problems.

wireless is well worth investing in but you will also need a wireless pci card in your dektop to connect.and i agree netgear is pretty good i have one myself but i have heard good reports about belkin.give it a go you wont regret it.

I had a terrible time with Belkin, I am now not recommending it to my customers. I ended up talking to 4 different tech people, one American hung up on me probably because it was quitting time. Next I got a foreign lady with a terrible temper, who got smart and said it was probably just the channels when I told her that I could get my neighbors signal(I had to run up and down my steps 22 times to check the 11 channels). Next I got a nice lady that said my card was fine and it was my router that needed adjusting but gave me the wrong software to load. And the last lady got me the right software and finally told me I had a bad router because I finally hooked up my computer right next to my router and it was still getting a very weak signal. So I probably wasted about 4 or 5 hours talking to Belkin people to find out I got a bad router and needed to exchange it. Same thing happened to my manager, I guess thats why they give a life time warranty.

i'm a personal fan of linksys routers.

Just as long as you enable some sort of encryption on the router (really easy to do) then you have no worries about people "stealing" connection. They have to have an ID and password to get on it.
