Assuming my CPU isn't my bottleneck at system startup, would moving all of my program files onto an external HDD improve system performance at startup, or whenever the internal HDD is used? I have a lot of programs that run on startup, and I may want to run XFire and Steam on startup too but I don't want to sacrifice system performance. I can get a 320GB external HDD for $90 at my school. Plus it's always good to have a backup.

And would it mess anything up if I just simply moved the program file folder onto my external HDD? There's a lot of stuff in there, haha I wouldn't want to manually reinstall everything.
 
You just can't move program file data from one drive to another without reinstalling the program and changing the install directory. If you were to move the program file to another folder or drive and go to run the program you would get "unable to find program/file error".
 
Hm, well maybe I could manually go through an uninstall all my programs that would be easy to reinstall on the external HDD. Would moving "My Documents" from my internal HDD to my external also speed up my main HDD in such that it won't have to search through so much. Either way, would it be beneficial to move some of my programs to an external hard drive improve system performance? At startup, my HDD light stays solid but my CPU stays around 60%.
 
If you are using the computer that is listed in your signature then you shouldn't be having any problems with speed, UNLESS, you were infected with viruses/malware. If you say that your hard drive activity light basically stays on all the time then I would say you have an infection somewhere. Download Hijackthis and post a log file please.

Sure it will speed up moving unecessary files over to your external, but stuff like program files don't move. An external hard drive is a hell of a lot slower then your internal. But stuff like music, movies and such go ahead and move to your external to free up some room.

I'm not really having problems with speed. It probably boots up in like a minute or two, shuts down in about 10 seconds. I was just wondering if adding an external hard drive and transferring my program files to my external hard drive would speed anything up. I might get an external HDD just for backup. I was wondering if it would be beneficial to anything else.

The only thing I see in there is that you are running an old version of Java. The newest is version 6 update 7 and you can download here...

Just make sure you uninstall any and all previous versions you already have on your system as they cause issues.

But getting back to your system running slow at bootup. The only thing that will speed that up is to stop any programs from running on boot up that you don't need to run. Use the "msconfig" utility to stop programs from running.
 
Okay well thanks for the DL. I already tried msconfig and I disabled some of the programs that I didn't need. It ended up starting up faster but made my computer go slower after. Once I re-enabled all of them it had a marginally slower bootup but performed faster in the long run.

But surely if my HDD is my bottleneck at startup, having 2 HDD's share the load would be better wouldn't it? Eg, XFire, Fraps, Steam, Logitech Setpoint, ObjectDock . . . etc.
 
Putting files on another drive will not speed up the computer. It will only save space on the other drive. Sometimes there is no other way to speed up a computer but to reformat and reinstall.
 
You will lose performance on an external drive due to the interface limitations. You are better off having your os on one drive and the page file on another (not partition but physical drive).

It can. If you load a hard drive with a ton of files it will slow down. And don't tell me other wise because I just moved about 100gbs of photoshop files onto my external and my computer is a lot faster.
 
Program files are different. My understanding of the OP's question was, if i install say Call of duy on another external drive (a program file e.g. like windows directory program files), will i see an improvement. The answer is simply no, because of the bandwidth limitation of a firewire, usb etc connection. Keep your windows drive defraged, and your page file on another drive, and you will be fine. An external drive is for storage only.

That is my understanding of the OP question as well and you are completely correct. Moving files like pictures and videos to an external drive is fine though. It wont necessarily improve performance but a nearly empty drive is faster than a nearly full one.
 
Oh okay. And sorry about the HJT, didn't know. Well I was thinking since my main HD might be maxed loading the OS, my external could load the startup programs. I might just get an external for backup. Maybe to improve system performance if I move all my music and stuff. I have 127GB free off of a 320GB (289 formatted) HD.
 
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but some people were saying if I were to get an external hard drive, it would be best to put the page file on it. Would it be better to get like an 8GB flash and use that for the page file? Or does that not work?
