i'm putting together my first computer.i have a abit p35 pro mobo with a intel core 2 quad Q6600 processor. it doesn't say anywhere that i should apply thermal grease to the top of the processor but i've heard somewhere that you needed to. do i need to pull off the fan and apply the grease or am i ok without it?? thanks for the help

If your CPU came with a HSF, then technically, you do not need thermal paste. However, many people like to remove the thermal pad that comes with the HSF and apply their own thermal paste to the CPU. This allows for better heat transfer and a more consistent application.

yes, HSF is heat sink fan. sometimes the HSF will already have thermal paste on the bottom of it. if it does not, you need to add a pea sized amount to the top of the CPU, then attach the HSF with even pressure on all ends so that the thermal paste will spread out to cover the top of the CPU everywhere that the CPU comes in contact wiht the HSF
