Thermal pads question

Guys,

I just have a question reguarding that thermal pad thingy that usualy come stock on AMD heatsinks.

How long do they last?
Do they eventualy give up?

Ive had my pc for over 3 years now and my temps are still good but i just wanted to know.

They also came with Intels. They should last forever if never removed. MY old 133mhz Pentium has one and it still works fine. And its even been removed. Id recommend using thermal comound though, perhaps Artic Silver 5. But if your temps are fine, then its working fine. It shouldnt give up.
 
Yeah, the thing is if you remove the HSF, you're really suppose to reapply some other paste. However, as long as it's not messed with, you should be fine for quite a while. There is no harm in changing it now and then, as I hear you're suppose to reapply the paste every few months. However, I don't do that :P

If you're temps are fine, don't mess with it!

They probably say that to get you to buy more paste.
 
I don't remember where I read that but it wasn't a place advertising the thermal paste or anything... However, I don't totally see the reason. I got board one day and cracked open a Celeron 1.7GHz. It has your typical white thermal paste inside between the large metal plate and the processor die. Of course, there's no way to replace that without...
 
i prefer the arctic silver 5 if ur overclocking or have heat issues but if not the thermal pad is great. and there a little special thing about it too, its FREE!!!!!:D
