igot some thermal paste for my new prcessor. it comes in a little tube< how and how much do i need to put on

a very small amount just over the core of the cpu, don't go overboard. You just need the thermal paste to make contact to the core and the heatsink, that is its sole purpose.

The size of a rice grain is enough, on the center of the processor. Put the heatsink on, and twist is slightly, then secure it. That way, no air bubbles are in the thermal compound.

I put a small strip accross on side of the CPU die. Then I use a straight razor blade to spread it in an even layer to cover the entire die.

There are a few methods of doing it, either using the pressure of the heatsink to spread the compound, or using a straight edge like a razor blade or a piece of card to spread it. It is isn't crucial to get compound right to the edge of the head spreader, and could prove messy if it leaks over the edge. The most important thing is getting an airbubble-free contact in the center region of the heat spreader, directly above the cpu itself.
